Second, it put SOPA-supporting chairman Lamar Smith, a conservative Republican whose district is largely Texas Hill Country, on the defensive by appearing to show him siding with the intellectual-property rights of people who create triple-X movies.

that's sheer genius.

I wish I was enough of a bastard to pull something like this off.

God DAMN! Just watching these pro-SOPA idiots stomping all over the Freedom of Speech at the command of their corporate Masters has been disgusting. They're not even trying anymore to convince us that they're NOT the prison biatches of Hollywood executives and recording company fatcats.

Does this batch of morons truly have no conscience, or are they just too stupid to be sneaky about it like the politicians of 20-30 years ago were?

Finally something that comes from a Colorado politician I can be proud of. Too bad he's not my rep so I can't vote for him.

This entire SOPA debate sickens me. Who's pushing for this bill? Not the American people, but the RIAA and MPAA. Who's fighting back? Pretty much everyone - I've never seen anyone, left or right, support this stinker.

And yet politicians of both parties seem intent on ramming it through. Even if we stop it, the fact that it's even being considered shows how much this system is farked up.

/There are a lot of issues I care about
//But I'm an internet native first and foremost, and I, a hardline Socialist, could see myself voting for Republican and Libertarian candidates if they promised to stand up to the MAFIAA for the cause of internet freedom.
///If this stinker passes, I'm never voting for anyone who supported it again. Obama included. I'll write people in, I'll vote third party, I'll certainly vote major party if the candidate stands up against it. And I might not be American for much longer, if any english-speaking countries resist the tide of censorship and will let me in.

I've never seen such blatant and uncaring disregard for the will of the American people. It's sickening. I actually felt nauseous watching the debate.

Well, something does need to be done about porn piracy. Obviously not this, but they are being hit hard.

CNBC had a great porn documentary (new window). The top video, Porn Under Assault, goes into how the internet has changed things. Not just with piracy, but with a lower barrier for entry.

And it's terrifying that people in congress, who can't even hire competent people to manage their own campaign websites (new window) half the time, are trying to regulate the internet.

2011-12-17 09:10:53 PM
Old grey haired men who remember a time before the internet, should not be interested in regulating the internet.

Leave that for my generation.

And with that said, the Porn Industry, who basically created the modern internet (buying products via credit card? Streaming videos? Those are all porn industry innovations!) should hate SOPA. They get plenty of free advertising by having their free shiat floating around various websites. I would know. I've uh . . . done research. Exhaustive . . . sticky . . research.

And it looks like a number of them are already banding together against this! (new window)

YAY PORN.

i suspect that the beast swallowed its own tongue some time ago. the congress critters are largely not crooks and liars. they grew up with the mass media propaganda of the old crooks and liars and genuinely believe these things that they say.

I dont know if that's comforting.

Expect the ALCU to hit the ground with tires spinning with a court challenge even before the ink is dried. Even the rightwing side of the Supreme Court is gonna be hard-pressed to explain with a straight face how this steaming runny pile can be Constitutional.

Yet, they can't agree on a goddamn budget.

Worst congress ever.

Well, maybe the Congress in 1860 was worse. So I guess this is like #2 or #3.

They claimed they were adjourning the issue til next year, but it turns out that they are going to push it through on the 21st of this month, which seem to have escaped fark's attention, but not reddit's. I tried to submit a headline pointing out that Congress is willingly working over the holiday (a miracle by anyone's standards) but so far no one gives a shiat.

Enjoy the internet while you can. It'll be over when this bill passes (in less than a week).

It gets even worse, just read a little bit and apparently it allows the right to block the order of physical goods.

I can see it now. Apple blocking generic 3rd brand $1 chargers from ebay among other things.

Weaver 95, eh? Sounds like you are infringing upon the copyright of Sigourney Weaver, and Windows 95, which most of congress still uses. I hereby declare fark offline! There is an appeal process, but first you have to complete this scavenger hunt in Norway, up in the arctic circle. Once you have completed the scavenger hunt, come to us, and we will politely explain that the appeal window has closed and you will be politely escorted to a police army van, for detention as long as this horrible war goes on.

But don't worry, as soon as people stop being terrified, you'll be released. I personally can't understand what everyone is so scared about, we are raiding people's houses every day, and throwing copyright infringers into black bags - yet people remain afraid. Obviously there is a lurking threat out there and we can only remain vigilant and remember that we are at war within our own borders. Freedom prevails.

Weaver95: it'll take at least a year to get their enemies list together. THEN the internet will be f*cked.

And btw, the 'enemies list' is anyone reporting on the widespread and violent suppression of protests. It won't take a year to get on that list, nor will it take a year for the riots to break out. SOPA has to pass first, followed by the NDAA. After that, people will have to rely on word of mouth, and you can rest assured that most people are too stupid to use their mouths to spread anything other than herpes.

The mental image of some Congressman standing there and reciting the lyrics "Me up all night honking me horn" with a straight face and deadpan voice in front of a bunch of old people is about the funniest thing I've experienced all month.

I don't think it will pass. The tech companies and internet search engines like Google have way more pull than the MAFIAA. You think they're going to stand for being the potential targets of lawsuits? Do you think Americans will stand for having their internets (and pr0n) censored?

No farking way, Jose.

Well, in case you haven't been paying much attention lately, it doesn't particularly matter to Congress what Americans think.

Not that I blame them all that much when I know most of my countrymen would promptly abandon their outrage as soon as a new episode of a favorite TV show came on.

Wow. Overdrama much?

If you folks have so little faith in humanity, whether on the realpolitik side or the brainwashed masses side, why bother airing your opinion at all? It's all going to be a long series of disappointments for you, anyway. People like us will drag people like them kicking and screaming into the next stage of human evolution even if it means suffering through idiocy like this.

And I should point out to the folks wanting to leave this country if this bill passes that American immigrants overseas are treated much worse than the foreign immigrants are treated over here. Especially in Canada.

Then we would watch TV and shop through the internet, and free ideas would be on the replacement internet?
