So, what we've learned is that when "Chuck" is the only new television program on, people will instead tune in to Spanish language programming.

They should make it mandatory to subtitle all Spanish language programs in English. In Europe, TV subtitles have increased foreign language skills in the small countries where they are used.

Univision: The "We have hot chicks speaking Spanish, but that doesn't matter because you're not watching for the plot" network.

I hope you're trolling. There is no official language in this country. Why not subtitle all English shows into Spanish? Hispanics are the largest and fastest growing minority in this country, surely us "real Americans" could stand to learn more about their culture.

The Generalissimo.

And their talk show hosts always get in hot tubs with hot girls...in their suits. Pure ratings gold.

And I'm in the broadcast industry, I can tell you their turnover is very high, b/c they are a crappy company to work for...much in the same mold as Clear Channel.

They'll fire anybody. It's a strange case where the on-air talent has less job security than the behind-the-cameras crew, or at least that's how it was understood when I lived in Florida.

Then again you only need big breasts (if female) or have a TV face (if male) and learn to say "Castro/Chavez sucks" often enough to qualify as a news anchor there. Maybe except Jorge Luis Ramos, but he's the exception that proves the rule.

I'd never understood why Telemundo never managed to overtake Univision in anyway, until I learned who their parent company is.

I would like to see the Spanish language channels provide SAP or subtitles in English.
Why not? The Japanese language channels in the bay area have them.
It would probably expand their ratings. Is there a real reason they don't have them?

Did you read this post before you responded, or did you just jump at the word "mandatory?" It sounds to me like he's making the very point that maybe us "real Americans" would learn more about the culture if we knew what the hell was going on via subtitles.

Yeah, this is news to me too, but not for the reason you're thinking of.

The Bay Area has always had a robust Asian population, but for the most part the Japanese segment seemed to rely on satellite subscription services to get their TV fix. Lots of my childhood was spent bugging my parents to go to Sushi restaurants as much for the food as the fact that they inevitably subscribed to some satellite package that let them get NHK and the Sumo Wrestling Championships.

However, even back in the late 80s there were at least 3 Chinese-language OTA channels in the greater Bay Area alone. I always figured it was some sort of weird cultural thing about the Japanese that they thought OTA in the US was unsuitable for their TV. It's not like there wasn't enough population to support it.

Dunno, might be that the digital transition has raised the quality bar, as it were. OTA in the 80s was obviously analog, and even an area as relatively flat as SF/SJ has interference. Those Chinese channels came in like ass more often than not. Now with digital it's going to be an all-or-nothing prospect... a bit like satellite, now that I think about it.

On another topic, I've toyed with the idea of building my own HTPC off and on for years, but one of the things that's kept me from doing so has been a lack of features that would make it worth it over just downloading the damn show. One of the features that would make it worth it, one of the ones I've been searching for for years, is an Auto-Translate for Closed Captions feature. It's not like this would be very hard: read text, find sentence breaks, send to Google Translate or similar. Hell, the find sentence breaks part would be optional for the Romance Languages (Spanish, French, Italian). The hardest part would be making allowances for things with Active Captions (the ones that scroll, like news programs).

Despite that, nobody has done this yet. Why? I dunno about you, but I'd love to watch some of those overly extravagant Spanish-language shows I keep hearing about if I was able to understand what the hell was going on. Hell, I'll watch the talk shows with the hot girls in the hot tubs anyway, but I digress....

I've looked into this. It turns out they do on their national feeds, but a lot of local affiliates don't rebroadcast the second channel of closed captioning.

Why? It would require an extra bit of already expensive equipment, and local Univision affiliates are rarely cash-heavy operations.
