I love Dunkin' Donuts, and glad they won out over Krispy Kreme, but they're almost as bad as Subway in the way they hand out their franchises. Here in Connecticut, there are places where you will literally find 6 different DD's on one stretch of road, all 30 seconds from one another, some of which are across the street from each other. Not sure I'd be willing to invest in a company that's spreading itself out so thin.

BTW, the ham and cheese on french roll sandwiches they're test-marketing in Rhode Island are *excellent.* Making the move to more substantial lunch offerings was a smart move.

/ Tuna on croissant not bad either.

I live right down the street from the first ever Dunkin Donuts.

/cool story

spman: glad they won out over Krispy Kreme,

They didn't really win out, Krispy Kreme just took on too much debt in their expansion efforts and found themselves unable to pay the debt on time. Myself, I love both Krispy Kreme and Dunkin Donuts.

I had a supervisor once ask me to pick up donuts for his meeting on my way in one morning. He said he didn't pass a DD on his commute. I am not certain what route he takes, but I am almost positive it is impossible to drive for twenty minutes in New England and not pass one.

/boring story bro

east coast crap franchise.

Now, if Tim Horton's would ever expand outside of Canada.........

Oh it has sir. It has. It's all over metro Detroit.

Yet still no DD in Oregon or Washington.

Oh well. We've got Voodoo. Too bad for you Seattleites. All you've got is that dry, bready crap served at Top Pot. I've had better donuts from 7Eleven and Safeway.

/stirrin' up da shiat on an early Saturday morning... ;)

DD makes good donuts, but I don't get the love for their coffee. Must be why they aren't big on the West Coast. We like coffee stronger out here.

Can you believe that people still think that Krispy Kreme went down because of the low-carb diet thing?

and their 90'th store outside of the Boston Metropolitan Area.

/seriously, there is a LOT of DD's in the Boston area.

I was under the impression it was impossible to walk for 20 minutes in New England without coming across a Dunkin' Donuts.

If I remember correctly, the hotel my wife and I stayed in in Burlington (about 20 minutes outside Boston), there were over 100 DD's within a 5 mile radius.

That's not an exaggeration.

Here in CT the DD are everywhere, and they are popular. Put all the Tim Horton's out of business in New England for good! I actually had to plan my morning commute to avoid any local DDs (there are at least 20) because the drive through lines usually extend out into the street and block traffic. To me, they were once good when they made the donuts in the store. Now that their donuts are microwaved frozen turds I go to Heavenly Donuts or North Haven's Donut place if I need some to bring to work. My employees love me for that.

No, i'm not kiddin', you have to order with an Indian accent. The other day a little monkey handed me my turbo hot and a guy with a cobra on his head rang up my order. They renamed some of the menu items too, like "Bengali cream" and "Diwali roast". It's no joke!

Dunkin failed out of Southern California many years ago(along with Winchell's and Krispy Kreme[to some extent]). Nothing beats the old Korean people that run the random corner donut shop

They (or Tim's) have got a lot of room to grow in the US. Quite a lot of the middle-section of the country where there's none of the chain donuts, only donuts being either Casey's General Store or very sporadic local/Daylight places.

It's not the lack of population. Tim and Dunkin have shown that there is enough market for two or more of the same chain in towns of under 10,000 in Saskatchewan or Maine. There's a quarter-million people in greater Sioux Falls. And one tiny non-drive-through Daylight Donuts downtown is the only donut store in the entire metro.

2011-12-17 12:33:44 PM
We just got a Dunkin Donuts here. Still, no donut can top a Krispy Kreme hot off the line.

2011-12-17 12:36:01 PM
I know that it's frowned upon on Fark to like chain anything, but I like Dunkin' Donuts.

I've never had a bad donut from them (I prefer cake donuts, which is why I never got into KK), and I do really like their coffee.

I also like McDonald's coffee, so whatever.

2011-12-17 12:36:56 PM
Have posted and will continue to post in every Fark donut thread: the best donuts in LA can be found at Spudnuts on the corner of Venice and Sawtelle. Nothing chichi, nothing pretentious - your typical mix of crullers, cake donuts, and old-fashioned. All made on the premises and most cost about 75 cents.

2011-12-17 12:37:43 PM
Inasmuch as street signs in New England are hidden, unreadably tiny, or non-existent, everyone there navigates using Dunkin Donuts as landmarks.

That Local Place >> TH > DD > Shipleys >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Crispy Creme.

Tim's and Dunkin's are redundant. Tim's had to close a few locations in New England because they couldn't compete with the Dunkin Donuts. However Tim's seems to be doing well in places like Michigan and New York which I attribute to it's proximity to Canada and being exposed to Canadian culture more (mostly thorough sponsorship of NHL games). It would really have to sell the brand in places like the Midwest and the South.

That said, Tim's is superior to Dunkin's in terms of coffee and especially sandwiches. Dunkin's sandwiches are a joke.

Tim Horton's are all over the place in Michigan and it's the most overrated crap I've ever tasted. Dunkin, donuts has better donuts, bagels, breakfast sandwiches and coffee. I can't name one thing at Tim Horton's that's better than Dunkin'.

Iced Capp, good sir. You have excellent taste in films but that's no excuse for such an oversight.

I have not been in a Dunkin Donuts in years. From all the advertising they do for coffee, sammiches etc., I was unaware that they still sold donuts.

This is only their 10,000th store? It feels like there are 10k stores in Massachusetts alone.

I was in New Hampshire once and I received driving directions that included, I kid you not, "Turn right at the intersection with the church on the one corner and the Dunkin' Donuts on the other." Which is basically anywhere in New England.

/For a chain store, Dunkie's is pretty darn good.

In the right place you can cram the stores together and still barely cannibalize each others' business. In Philly's Suburban Station there's a place you can stand and see 2 Dunkin Donuts. And there's a third in the station too. And even with that they still have deep lines and the need for express counters.

The Donuts aren't as good as they used to be, but I have to say the coffee is fantastic; unlike Starbucks, they know the difference between dark roast and burnt. Also their pumpkin muffin is actually pumpkiny.

2011-12-17 02:49:45 PM
Has anyone mentioned how many stores there are in New England yet?

2011-12-17 02:59:30 PM
Dunkin' Donuts is horrible if you expect to go there for a decent donut. Hell, there are about a dozen locations surrounding me (Philly suburbs...they are everywhere) and I usually avoid them. They are okay for a breakfast sandwich or coffee, but they no longer make the donuts on site...they get delivered on trucks every day. If you buy them early in the day they are so-so, but awful if you wait too long.

\Local donut shop "Yum Yum!" or even the donuts at the supermarket taste fresher than the Dunkin' ones.

2011-12-17 03:23:26 PM
Anyone who goes to Dunkins for the food is wasting their time.

Something about that coffee.

They all look so good, but have the taste and texture of stale Wonderbread.

Worst. Donuts. Ever.

Winchell's was better than Top Pot.

5 Point helped get the taste out of my mouth. Will happily eat there again.

Top Pot donuts are kind of meh, but they do server an Ephemere mocha which, as a chocolate snob, is a drink I wish I could get in Portland. Not really complaining, though...Voodoo is freakin' magic, and when I do go for a mocha it's at Jim and Patty's (Black Tiger Adult Mocha FTW).

/We've even got the Timbers while they're stuck with the Flounders...it's really much better here.

Being from California, I've never been to a DD. That being said, their coffee that you can buy in stores has almost half the flavor of Yuban. Maybe 3/5th.

why is it the further you drive from Boston the worse their coffee gets?

I never knew why regional franchises known nation-wide don't, you know, open stores nation-wide? I'm pretty farking sure that if, say, In-N-Out opened a store on the east coast, the locals would go bat-shiat crazy for it.

Because people in Boston like weak brown coffee, at least in my experience.
