I worked in a gas station in the section 8 housing ghetto up there, and every day they'd buy armloads of gatorade and ice-cream with their EBT cards, then pull a wad of cash out of their pocket to buy cigarettes, booze, and lottery tickets. Even saw a black girl scream at a cashier once because she couldn't buy a fountain soda with EBT. It only took a month to feel like I was ready to talk to a Klan recruiter.

A women who started working in our accounts payable department is a poster child for this poor white deeply conservative stereotype. She and her husband were both on unemployment for over a year, on a variety of other public programs, etc. But listens to conservative talk radio, rants on how everyone on welfare/unemployment/public assistance are all leaching drug using ghetto trash who are gaming the system, etc.

When I moved to Maine 18 years ago, there were no Canadians.

Yeah...we do...trouble is, most of them are also immigrants. Portland was a haven city for Somali refugees. When some of them moved to Lewiston, the mayor freaked, and...well... (new window)

It's hilarious watching Republicans using the same techniques on a local level that they use on a national level. The context isn't even close. Think about every demon that the Republicans have. Now imagine a circumstance where those demons are either demographically insignificant (illegal immigrants) or have massive public support (LGBT). Now give them unprecedented control (both chambers of the Legislature and the Executive with filibuster-proof majorities and a Capitol where lobbyists are strictly regulated).

Now watch them try to govern.

It isn't long before they start blaming the systems they're in charge of, flailing about for enemies that don't exist, backtracking every third statement they make, attacking the press at every opportunity for having the temerity to report this stuff, and complaining that the mean old Judiciary won't let them do anything fun.

Watching the Governor get the ab-dabs whenever someone points out the unforeseen consequences of one of his decisions has become a drinking game, and his staff are PAINFULLY ill-prepared to talking to CNN. When something our governor does becomes a headline in the national press, hilarity is about to ensue. Also backtracking. And whining. Lots of whining.

I figure this is basically what it would look like if Herman Cain became President - a none-too-bright former CEO with broad base support in his party who hasn't yet figured out how to operate his brain-to-mouth filter and doesn't really have any experience governing.
