toyotaboy: everyone's had a dog die

"Life is a series of dogs"

Every so often I forget about that clip then I find it and think "Oh, cool. Jimmy Stewart's poetry".

Then something similar to this happens

I remember this from many years ago when I bought the vhs "best of Carson" tapes for my dad. It was shortly after the dog I grew up with had died at 16 years of age. Long story short, I'm all grown up now, and I'm still a sucker for this poem and the way Jimmy recites it. Thanks, subby.

I grew up with a great dog, so I understand the sentiment. I hate to be a contrarian, but a dog that bites humans needs to securely locked away from strangers or put to sleep.

I have Jimmy Stewart's book of poetry that has this poem in it. I met him when he signed my book.

One of my favorite actors, ever.

He really was a good actor, wasn't he? The first film of his I saw was The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. I then moved on to the ones he did with Hitchcock (Rear Window sits in my top 5 favorite movies) and others beyond those. He's the kind of actor I look out for because I trust in the choices he made in respect of the roles he took. He was also a bit of a badass - flew bombers in WW2. I didn't know about the poetry - that one gave me a lump in my throat

They ran out of time before they could read the last few lines. Here they are, in case you're curious:

I killed the man the other day, whose truck it was that lost its way
And took poor Beau away.
I shouldn'a done it, but I'm not sorry. I cut the brake lines on his lorry.

I cried my eyes out many years ago when Jimmy first read that.

I don't even have to listen to it again to feel exactly as I did then. I remember.

The power of the well-written/spoken word is amazing.

Retired as an AF reserve one-star...I think, but I do know he did fly the B-58 Hustler...now that's a bad-ass lookin' aircraft!

Brilliant actor and was a true warrior.

I remember watching that live, too, back when The Tonight Show was worth watching.
