Or he'd rather see the Super Bowl and get a ring for his troubles.

Not to mention the Packers take really good care of their players. I suppose I could see a move if it meant warm weather or a really cool city....

I would say, between getting a raise and getting a chance to practice with Aaron Rodgers and the Packers' receiving corps, Green Bay's practice squad seems like a pretty solid place for a rookie.

2011-12-17 11:35:08 AM
Why not stay a while and learn from what seems to be the best offensive squad by far? He needs to get up and over practice squad level if he wants continued NFL playing time possibilities, after all.

Given the situation he currently finds himself, this seems to be a reasonable choice.

You never know, he could be planning to replace Donald Driver when he retires. The problem is Driver may not decide to retire for another year or two.

I wouldn't expect Driver to retire until 2017, his 100th consecutive season.

I don't think Driver (or Grant) will be on the team next year. TT subscribes to the "better to lose a guy a year too early than keep him a year too long" philosophy.

Also, Gurley looked really good in preseason. Many fans were calling for the Pack to keep 6 WRs so he wouldn't get taken from the practice squad.

From the practice squad, he'll be seeing the Super Bowl the same way the Vikings will. He might get a ring, but it'd feel a little disingenuous to me -- "Hey, look at this cool ring other people won for me!"

2011-12-17 12:48:02 PM
Even on the practice squad, he still gets a ring if they win the super bowl.

I'd choose to stay too.

He seems to be gambling that he'll get his shot soon enough, and the Packers are giving him a raise to stay, so why not hang on the championship bound team and wait for a spot. It's like choosing between being a paid intern at JP Morgan Chase or a fry "executive" at McDonalds.

He would probably get the ring anyway. Most teams give rings to any player that played for them that year. Even the administrative assistant in the front office can get a ring.

Yup, and it's not like he's going to get much playing time for the Vikings in their three remaining games. If he's looking to make an active roster he can wait until next season after being a part of a Super Bowl-caliber team for the next 8 weeks or so.

Looks like the minimum salary for a practice squad player is $5700/week, so it's not like he has too work a second job. Link (new window)

So yeah, even though his pay would more than triple for the next 3 weeks, with no guarantees beyond that it makes perfect sense for him to stay with a winning organization, especially if he's getting a raise to boot.

He also may end up with a Super Bowl ring, and a place in history as a member - sort of - as the first 19-0 NFL team.

That's a rather cheap shot at the guy, there are people who have never worn pads at any level who receive rings from the winning organization every year. If the practice squad had no value to the team, it wouldn't exist.

I don't always go for the disrespect thing a lot of Saints fans go for, but come on you gotta admit there is a lot of media bias against the Saints.

In 2009 Brees played a fantastic season and Superbowl, but you could hardly get ESPN to take 2 minutes to talk about them before breathlessly going back to Peyton Manning.

2011 Brees is playing the best game of football statics wise and can barely get mentioned beside Rodgers or Brady.

I really don't think it's that farfetched. If the Pack can't develop their running game, with that defense they could be in trouble, especially if they have to pass every play out on the Frozen TundraTM.

Aside from the Packers, it's been a while since a team beat the Steelers in the playoffs. Revenge is only for games that matter.

I don't know about ESPN, but the Saints fans around here have seemed a bit defensive lately. Having been on the other side of that coin before, I really do understand why, but as a packers fan I feel I still get to tweak a nose or two :)

Carrying on about ESPN, I try not to watch too much national stuff since they don't really understand individual teams, with a few exceptions such as Jaws and Hoge. They just pick a narrative and select facts to fit it, whether it's for good teams or bad. The Packers may be getting a lot of attention now, but there are plenty of other times I've seen them get ignored as well. And leading up to the Super Bowl it may have been more about Manning, but afterward you couldn't watch 5 minutes without that team being brought up.

So don't worry about those national idiots, and support your local papers and blogs covering your team. Your times-picayune beat writer probably knows 10 times as much about the Saints as Colin Cowherd, Skip Bayless, and Jon Clayton combined.

Well Brady is overrated and from the North East so of course he gets attention. But unfortunately for Brees, statistics wise Rodgers is actually playing the best game of football this year for a QB.

Meh, it meant so much more to the Ravens because they really don't have much else going for them. If the ratbirds win in the playoffs then it's a rivalry instead of just a fluke year.

Considering what Eli has to work with and the weapons Brees has, I'd agree. Most of Eli's WR corps is busted, Cruz came out of nowhere (literally)...Brees has that beast Graham, a good group of WRs, SPROLES for christsake....

That damn Mickey Loomis, doing his job well so that breaking Marino's 27-year record, having a completion percentage 8 points higher, 7 more TDs, 10 points higher in QB rating, and averaging 20 yards a game more doesn't mean shiat, lol.

Dilfer is usually honest in his criticisms, which could lead to some grudges.

Hoge will throw out some hyperbole at times, like they all do. And they always focus on the now rather than the past. It's not going to bring in viewers if the analyst is always telling us how some team from 5 or 10 or 40 years ago was better.
