Just one volcano can emit in one year greenhouse gasses equal to what mankind has produced during the past 100 years.

I liked the first, and honorable mention to Hawaii's anti-volcano where the earth is sucking up lava.

See, on one hand, you're right, there are too many farking people. On the other hand, why did you have to say it in such a stupid farking way?

david_gaithersburg: Just one volcano can emit in one year greenhouse gasses equal to what mankind has produced during the past 100 years.

Do they pay you retards to paste in this talking point every time someone mentions a volcano? Because it's not even remotely true, yet hundreds of derp-addled nincompoops vomit it out as soon as someone blows the right dog whistle.

From the United States Geological Society's page on Volcanoes and Climate Change:
"Do the Earth's volcanoes emit more CO2 than human activities? Research findings indicate that the answer to this frequently asked question is a clear and unequivocal, "No." Human activities, responsible for a projected 35 billion metric tons (gigatons) of CO2 emissions in 2010 (Friedlingstein et al., 2010), release an amount of CO2 that dwarfs the annual CO2 emissions of all the world's degassing subaerial and submarine volcanoes (Gerlach, 2011).

The published estimates of the global CO2 emission rate for all degassing subaerial (on land) and submarine volcanoes lie in a range from 0.13 gigaton to 0.44 gigaton per year (Gerlach, 1991; Varekamp et al., 1992; Allard, 1992; Sano and Williams, 1996; Marty and Tolstikhin, 1998). The preferred global estimates of the authors of these studies range from about 0.15 to 0.26 gigaton per year. The 35-gigaton projected anthropogenic CO2 emission for 2010 is about 80 to 270 times larger than the respective maximum and minimum annual global volcanic CO2 emission estimates. It is 135 times larger than the highest preferred global volcanic CO2 estimate of 0.26 gigaton per year (Marty and Tolstikhin, 1998).

In recent times, about 70 volcanoes are normally active each year on the Earth's subaerial terrain. One of these is Kīlauea volcano in Hawaii, which has an annual baseline CO2 output of about 0.0031 gigatons per year [Gerlach et al., 2002]. It would take a huge addition of volcanoes to the subaerial landscape-the equivalent of an extra 11,200 Kīlauea volcanoes-to scale up the global volcanic CO2 emission rate to the anthropogenic CO2 emission rate. Similarly, scaling up the volcanic rate to the current anthropogenic rate by adding more submarine volcanoes would require an addition of about 360 more mid-ocean ridge systems to the sea floor, based on mid-ocean ridge CO2 estimates of Marty and Tolstikhin (1998).

There continues to be efforts to reduce uncertainties and improve estimates of present-day global volcanic CO2 emissions, but there is little doubt among volcanic gas scientists that the anthropogenic CO2 emissions dwarf global volcanic CO2 emissions."

References given in full in the cited link.

Recap:
Your claim: 1 volcano, 1 year, CO2 roughly equal to 100 years of anthropogenic emissions.
Reality: All volcanoes, 1 year, CO2 roughly equal to 3 days of anthropogenic emissions.

Not only are you wrong, even if you were talking about one volcano, you would be off by a factor of 10,000. Throw them all in, and you're off by millions.

That's not regular wrong. That's not 'I guess I rounded incorrectly' wrong. That's 'I'm so fantastically wrong that the only explanation is that I'm so gullible that I believe any bullshiat fed to me as long as it makes me feel better about my political ideology' wrong.

In summary: Your post is bad and you should feel bad.

I agree that petroleum subsidies are a terrible idea, but this thread is about volcanoes.

Oh, wait. Did you believe that hill of bullshiat that david_gaithersburg spewed out? Because if so, "That's 'I'm so fantastically wrong that the only explanation is that I'm so gullible that I believe any bullshiat fed to me as long as it makes me feel better about my political ideology' wrong." david_gaithersburg: Just one volcano can emit in one year greenhouse gasses equal to what mankind has produced during the past 100 years.

However, volcanic eruptions put so much ash into the stratosphere that the gases emitted are trivial. This ash disperses globally and can remain in suspension for several years. Volcanic ash reflects sunlight back to space thereby lowering the temperature globally. In years of high volcanic activity, snowfall increases globally and summers are generally cooler. Vulcanism is very important to a stable global temperature regimen. Were it to cease today, the planet would rapidly warm to the point to where it cannot sustain most of the life on it. Also much of the constituent gases in the atmosphere originate from volcanic eruptions and the greenhouse gases they produce are a part of the natural balance.

/science: a good thing to know

Did I specify CO2 as being the ONLY gas produced by volcanoes? Did I specify CO2 being the ONLY greenhouse gas?

Please, continue, you mouth-breathing retard. You're only millions of times wrong so far. Tell us how much methane survives coming out of a volcano into oxygenated air at ~1100C.

Here are the most prevalent gases emitted by volcanoes: Water vapor, CO2, SO2, H2, CO, H2S, HCl, HF. Hydrogen gas has no infrared-active mode. We've accounted for CO2. Let us know what you think the greenhouse impact of the other gases is, and how long they stay in the atmosphere after an injection. Consider that a large fraction of the world's volcanoes are underwater, so the water-soluble gases mentioned above never make it to the atmosphere.

Please, keep explaining. You're doing so well and being so convincing.
