Its four Beehive State billboards aim to let "nonbelievers" know they're not alone this time of year.

Why is 'nonbelievers' in quotes?

"Bernie Anderson, pastor at Wasatch Hills Seventh-day Adventist Church in Salt Lake City, said the foundation is free, like anyone else, to express a viewpoint. But he sees a little irony in the way they're doing it.

"While they may not believe in God, they are still quite religious in their approach," Anderson said. "At some level, they are proselytizing, trying to convince others of their viewpoint.""

It's interesting that he defines "religion" as "trying to convince others of their viewpoint."

It kind of degrades and diminishes what religion is supposed to be if anyone who says what they think is declared "religious" by default. That definition makes a mockery of religion. Without realizing it, Mr. Anderson has declared watching Twilight movies to be a sacrament.

Under his definition, the guy demonstrating nonstick cookware in the housewares department at Sears is exercising a religion.

That seems to be a driving force of many religious people: convincing others in order to reinforce their own belief. Often it's so important that it becomes THE defining element of how they see the religion. Ergo, anyone trying to convince others of something must be by definition, preaching a religion.

Why is 'nonbelievers' in quotes?

Have you not been in very many fark religious flame-wars? There is a segment of religious folk who sincerely do not understand how any person could actually lack belief in a deity because it is so second-nature to them. They believe you don't really lack belief, but instead are just angry at god (why else put up billboards about atheism during christmas, they would reason). Hence "nonbeliever" in quotes. Not sure if that was the intent of the use in this article, but it is something I've seen many times before.

I must admit I bail out of most flame-wars because they're so predictable and boring. You make a good point, though.

I thought agnostics would be too apathetic to put up billboards. I know I am.

That segment of religious folk you speak of tries to establish a universal norm for human behavior and there simply are none. Many of the same ideas are arrived at for different reasons. Some do reject the idea of God out of spite with the argument that if there was a god how could he allow such atrocities.

Then there is what I believe to be the majority that simply look at facts and rationally derive that religion is man made. Though it's certainly possible to still be angry at religion due to the fundamental idea it's a lie and actively deceives people, often times with an agenda.

There's nothing going on. That's what I saw when I looked out over the city: nothing. How the Mormon settlers looked upon this valley and felt that it was the promised land is beyond me. I don't know, maybe it looked different back then.

Atheists, this is why people don't like you.

2011-12-17 12:25:52 PM
I don't understand the atheist and agnostic groups that pompously act like they can educate people out of religion. I happen to think that religious faith is non-rational (that isn't to say that it's irrational or that there aren't reasons for it) but rather faith requires a commitment that reason cannot make because it's more of a spiritual or emotional mechanism. To me, it would be like trying to reason someone out of love. It is possible, but some of these atheist groups attack the person (sometimes insult) this seems to only strengthen the bond between faith and faithful.

I think religion does a lot of terrible things in this world, but it does good things, too. And many people have dedicated themselves to lives of sacrifice, self-effacement, and charity in the name of religion. Many people have quit drugs and their lives of violence in the name of religion. In the words of Stephen Fry it would be "impertinent and stupid of me" to castigate them.

I'm tired of the pointlessness of the more vocal and judgemental atheist/agnostic groups. It is arrogant and misguided.

It didn't have any people to say no to polygamy. That's what made it promised.

So, when I see the over 9000 "Jesus is the reason for the season" billboards, is that a good reason to hate Christians?

FloydA: It's interesting that he defines "religion" as "trying to convince others of their viewpoint."

Well, religions are man made institutions designed to generate profit and power. This profit and power is directly proportional to the number of members. So I think "trying to convince others of their viewpoint" is an accurate description of what religions do.

Not sure how it applies to atheists as most of us never join any atheist group nor do we ever give any money to them.

Again, the only winner in this battle are the billboard owners who are renting the space out. This season must be their most profitable. If I were them, I would charge both groups twice the rate because of their silly tug of war.

When you live in a place where 60% of the people think that a child molesting con man was a prophet of an invisible sky wizard and his zombie son; then atheism is a logical reaction.

It takes a lot of balls to do something like this in Utah. Utah is the closest thing we have to a theocracy in this country.

Because they adhere is a belief system. They hold Sunday meetings, put up billboards in an attempt to convert people to their beliefs, etc., etc. If they weren't so annoying it would be sad.
