"I screamed don't tell me I put them in the wrong car." It was the second day in a row of bad luck. "I got laid off the day before, replacing the gifts won't be easy," Gipson said.

Pretty easy to get your head in the wrong place after some bad news like that. Hope someone returns it.

Is it that common that your key would work in someone else's car?

I do hope that she gets the gifts back so her kids will have a nice Christmas.

Bathia_Mapes: Is it that common that your key would work in someone else's car?

Actually yes. I remember (no citation, I'm not googlewaring it) that most car companies use only a dozen or less unique keys for some models of popular cars--so there quite a bit of overlap for companies and popular cars.

Okay...Citation. Link (new window)

OK - I know you have kids and it's Christmas and all... but you did not need to buy $700 worth of crap. Seriously - who goes out and spends like crazy the day after they get laid off?

Since when did they change the meaning of "for" to "from"?

Tomorrow's headline: Woman thanks God for making $700 worth of gifts appear in the back of her White Focus.

I placed eight hundred thousand gold bars in some dude's trunk by mistake, now give me my $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!!

Did I mention I was laid off just yesterday?

2011-12-17 01:34:24 AM
So, I'll ask the question. Halfway through shopping she's already spent $700 and still going on the day after she's laid off. Anyone else thinking maybe this is a message from the god of common a** sense.

From what I understand it's common on doors and trunk for cars of the same make/model.
The ignition has the RFID chip on the fob which has far more codes in the mix.

That happened to me once (not losing property, but using a key on the wrong car).

Yes, it was scary. Now I never even put valuables in the trunk.

I had to replace a lock on my Saturn, so I went to the wrecking yard. First car I tried was a match.
Having said that, what kind of idiot spends $700 on Christmas after being laid off? Your kids don't deserve those presents and you deserve to be poor. You are a bad money manager.
If you spent $700 on Christmas gifts for your kids under those conditions, you had better be buying for at least 35 kids.

Before entering your vehicle, you should check that the plate matches,
check underneath with mirror for explosives,
check tires for sharp implements,
check under hood for explosives or tampering,
check brake line for cuts,
check gas line for cuts,
check locked gas cap for tampering,
check inside for unfamiliar guests in back seat,
check door locks are active,
check around vehicle with hand held giegercounter,

After that;happy motoring!

Let's flip a coin, Heads - it's "You enjoy rubbing salt in the wounds much?" and tails it's "you like kicking them when they're down much?"

Here we go!

It's tails!

*Ahem* - Hey bud, you like kicking them when they're down much?

This used to happen frequently lot for business rentals, as car rental companies tended to allocate just a few models in each rental class for business travelers. Several times over the years I've rented a car on a business trip, gone to a hotel full of other business travelers, woken up the next morning with dozens of cars in the same make/model/color in the parking lot, and accidentally opened up another car.

Britney Spear's Speculum: Story seems legit

Wait, she was laid off the the day before? I revise my statement. The story is totally bullshiat and she's conning suckers to chip in. The fact that this made the news (meaning someone contacted the news to get this story out, ala her.) is also suspicious.

The story is too "perfect."

Not everyone lives paycheck to paycheck. Of course, for all I know, she took out a title loan to get the cash for her shopping trip.

Happened to me about 20 years ago. I owned a white Tempo (yes, pity me) and so did about half the local populace. Unlocked and got into what I thought was my car, admired the rather attractive brassiere laying in the passenger seat that was DEFINITELY not mine, and the scrambled back out before anyone could accuse me of either grand theft auto or underwear fondling.

Or both.

2011-12-17 02:46:59 AM
If my wife was laid off, it wouldn't affect our Christmas spending one bit. Then again, we also still wouldn't be living paycheck to paycheck. Either way, I wouldn't want to lose 700 dollars. The story is probably fake anyway.

I don't know if it's true but I've heard that there aren't that many frequencies dedicated to garage door openers. Thieves will drive around neighborhoods with multiple openers and eventually find one they can open.

My remote for my Lexus has NEVER opened the door to anyone else's car. It's utter BS if Ford makes it this way on purpose.

Partly blame the woman. My confusion is why her Keyfob would work on another car. Another good reason not to buy American crap cars.

The vast majority of garage door openers are controlled by eight dip switches, which means that their are only 256 possible combinations/codes so it is very easy to get into anyone's garage. You can even buy nifty devices on line that will generate all 256 codes in a relatively short period of time if you really want to get into a particular garage. However, this isn't also always needed as many people have the dip switches set to all up or all down (1, 0) or half and half or alternating. Newer openers have ten or even twelve dip switches (1024 and 4,096 combinations respectively) but these can still be overcome with brute force frequency generators. A few manufacturers now use proprietary codes which can help but these too can be found online. Long story short: garages aren't secure.

It wasn't a fob, she used a key according to the video of the story.

How many other Lexuses have you tried to get into? Those are a -lot- less common than Focuses.

(Lexii? Focii?)

Generally, electronics are not used to secure anything but the ignition, and unless it was a very new Focus, it probably didn't have electronic key security anyway.

Imagine, your battery goes dead, and now you have to pick/jimmy the lock or break the window just to get to the hood release so you can get to the jumper terminals...

I wouldn't dismiss this as fake. As the owner of a rubber stamped car in a popular color, I've tried to get into vehicles that were not my own and have had my vehicle successfully entered by a senior citizen couple who were wondering why their car was such a mess and couldn't start the car or turn off the alarm until I told them it was my car.

So I learned a life tip: Do NOT park near cars that are like your own. Since keeping an eye out, I've managed to significantly reduce the number of instances of mistaken property.

That's good advice, but it's also possible that the driver of the other car parked next to her after she went inside the mall.

I live in an area that has an amazing number of cars that look almost exactly like mine. A friend of mine even has one. He was visiting one day when he went out to what he thought was his car and opened the door on mine, using his key.

Since that day, I put a very distinctive antenna ball on my car. It's my primary identifier - once at the car, I check the license plate to be certain it's my car. I also unlock mine using the key fob, instead of the key.

Yeah, this happened to me too. As a kid, the downstairs key to my apartment building would unlock my friend's front door. Probably didn't help that his mother was pretty paranoid.

My key opened up a car that was a different brand from the same country. The driver had parked their car next to mine while I was in at store. When I left I wasn't paying attention and went to the first car I saw because our cars had a similar color because of the lighting. I actually got into the driver's seat and noticed the lay out of the car was different from mine. It was creepy but I was glad I didn't get caught. I locked their door and went to my car.

Same goes for car keyfobs, for that matter. I've only used the newer garage door openers that have to be programmed like a wireless mouse (hit a button on the garage mount, hold a button on the remote) but I seriously doubt they are any better.

And for physical locks, to this day master keys are obtainable online for most brands.

Nobody who manufactures physical devices has any clue about encryption/authentication, and never asks the most basic "what would happen if someone found my specs..." questions.

/And yet tweakers still prefer to smash and crowbar windows instead of buying a cheap tool online.

Saved my buddy's mom from calling a locksmith when she locked her keys (had lost the other set shortly before that). Told him I had heard they had a limited number of key-sets for the doors in the Toyota (early 90's), I'd be over.. was at least worth a chance to save her the money. Stuck the key in and opened it right up.
