Damn. And here I thought this was just a really bad hangover.

I'm... uh, I'mmmmm...hm. Yeah.

2011-12-16 08:01:16 PM
I can assure you we don't have that in Pennsylvania. The lead, mercury, PCB's, other heavy metals and fracking chemicals would kill them off.

2011-12-16 08:02:04 PM
this explains a lot of the people I know from Louisiana.

2011-12-16 08:27:23 PM
Good thing I'm not in Louisiana, not that this thing would affect me. Ain't much up in the ol' noggin for them amoebas to eat.

2011-12-16 08:55:27 PM
Those must be some starving bacterias.

Amoebae are bacteria?

Dead for Tax Reasons: Amoebae are bacteria?

I don't think it is. Amoebas are eukaryotic where bacterias are prokaryotic.

I see you aren't subby then. All 50 states can step forward for their question. Unless there really are brain eating bacteria out there too

GWSuperfan: this explains a lot of the people I know from Louisiana.

In the small amount of time I spent in Louisiana the folk I encountered were the nicest I've ever encountered.

Still wouldn't want to live there...

It even says "amoeba" in the article.

FTA...Although Naegleria fowleri is most commonly found in pond water, lakes and rivers, officials said that two people in Mississippi recently fell victim to to the amoeba, seemingly after they used tap water in their neti pots.

2011-12-16 10:46:57 PM
From wikipedia: Although not a true amoeba, the organism is often referred to as an amoeba for convenience.

There, that should clear everything up.

If people are putting water up their noses, there's probably not much up in their noggin either. Unless they're drowning or being waterboarded.

Actually, nasal lavage is a legitimate means of therapy for people with various sinus or allergy issues. It's been around for thousands of years and is generally safe (granted, the water has to be clean).

Also, it really isn't meant to "drown" you. Behind your nose are the major sinus cavities which are usually empty. But when you get sick and your sinus cavities are infected, there's mucus that's just full of whatever is ailing you hanging about your sinuses (this is why you have the thick bright green or orange snot when you get sick). The idea of nasal lavage is to pass an isotonic saline solution through your sinuses so as to clear out the infected mucus from your sinus. It's also good for people with allergies because it can wash allergens out of the sinuses as well.

It is still a eukaryote, wheras bacteria are not

So it's not a bacteria, it's not an amoeba. It just doesn't fit in anywhere. No wonder it kills people. Poor little thing.

Anyone that rinses their sinuses deserves to have their brain rotted away.

I mean, who does that?

2011-12-16 11:23:45 PM
i can even think of a neti-pot user who deserves this very affliction

I know it is, but I can't imagine putting water up my nose like that. I would blow green snot out for a month before I did that. Plus I was getting a kick out of the picture with the article.

I gargle with salt water when I'm sick, but my nose is off-limits.

Well that explains why the state has Jindal as governor.

So, if the residents of the state do not snort their water, they shouldn't be in danger of contracting primary amebic meningoencephalitis.
i suppose that Darwin is in control of this 'epidemic'.

/Can't say they were trying to see how the water smelled, right?

Two more deaths to chalk up to psuedoscience

2011-12-16 11:41:56 PM
The article said the two cases were from Mississippi, not Louisiana. It was a warning that there also could be some in Louisiana, not that any was found.

RexTalionis: It's also good for people with allergies because it can wash allergens out of the sinuses as well.

Yeah, I can vouch that while being a fairly uncomfortable method of treatment, it does help clear out sinuses.

People in all 50 states and Canada use neti-pots

Only people in Louisiana get brain infections from the tap water

I'm pretty sure/almost certain/willing to bet several pay checks that this says nothing about neti-pots and a whole lot about how Louisiana treats its water.

When you're pulling your drinking water out of an open sewer known as the Mississippi, you'd better be chlorinating the crap out of it, literally. The only way this bug is surviving in the water distribution system is insufficient chlorination.

My dad's family is from Louisiana and I take offfense at how dead wrong you are with that statement.

These people were brain damaged long before this bacteria showed up.

There's a very popular hot springs in Yellowstone (the only one it's legal to go in) where you're not supposed to put your head under the water. I'm not sure if the sign is there warning you anymore, but if it was, it would look something like this:

The tap water at my home near New Orleans is great; the tap water at my apartment in Baton Rouge is farking disgusting and smells like shiat.

So really it depends on where you live.

I like to think that we treat our water like a member of the family.

WTF? Haven't we figured out how to keep nasties like this out of our drinking water supply by now? Have the republicans thrown us back into Medieval times due to their fetish for extreme budget cuts?

These people must have had well water that was not filtered. Well water in south Louisiana is probably not much different than swamp water.

I received a neti pot as a sample product through work. It was under my sink for months before I got sick one day. Sinuses were all congested but nothing would come out when I blew. Tried the neti pot finally. After a couple of tries, I figured out how to use it without drowning myself (my biggest fear)

Not the most graceful of procedures but when you don't feel well, you try anything. I can tell you this, the warm water/saline solution loosened whatever was up there and I blew out what I swear could have been a miniature brain. Felt validating.

/my husband wouldn't look at the "brain"
//yes, I really tried to show him

Yep. I finally gave it a try after having pretty much non stop sinus infections from the mold spores and such in our apartment.

Never had sinus infections before that, so it was quite an education. Docs don't like to give out antibiotics so you end up playing roulette with your money when you go into see one who's just as likely to tell you to "Come back in a couple weeks if it's still bothering you." Over the counter pills will only do so much.

/helped keep the pain down until we were able to move this past spring
//one of the buildings caught fire just a couple weeks ago
