`
Description:
It was possible to disconnect the remote
host by sending it an ICMP echo request packet containing the string '+ + + ATH0' (without the
spaces).
It is also possible to make the remote modem
hangup and dial any phone number.
`
The auto dial sounds part sounds like fun.

That's how it was supposed to work, but Hayes had a patent on the (wait a second) bit and some manufacturers didn't license or implement it.

I think my hangup script in Opus used to be +++ATH0+++ATZ as my Telebit trailblazer modems didn't play nice with the fossil driver I was using... resets between hangups were required to keep the board running.

Have you used a Coinstar machine lately? They still use dial up modems to access authorization for 3rd party gift card transactions. The first time I heard it, I thought I was transported back in time.

It's a trap!!

There's magnetic steel shot in there, or some kind of explosive, or just a big freakin' anvil above you- sure it doesn't make much sense, but it's best to let this one go.

They both do. The two will become allies, and soon you'll have monkeys riding on the backs of ostriches, howling for blood.

I used to pet sit a couple of dogs (husky and doberman) that got loose once (nothing to do with me, just their air-headed owners) and raided a nearby ostrich farm. It was all over the local news. That's my CSB, but in all seriousness, those farkers are mean and can break your neck if they kick you in the head, which they will try to do. (the ostriches, not the dogs).

Acquaintance of mine was going to make his fortune raising ostrich. Spent thousands on a couple breeding pairs. Several months later I'm at a party and I run into him. I ask him how the ostrich business is going. He gets a pained look on his face and starts telling me that when you put up a fence for ostrich it needs to be pretty strong and tall but when you put in a gate you need to make sure that the gate is either so close to the fence post that the opening is smaller than the diameter of their neck or they need to be far enough apart that the opening is wider than the size of their head. Like a good little straight man, I ask why this is. He allows as how, if it's in that wrong size, the ostrich will try to reach through there but won't raise his head up to get out, rather he will back up and pull his head right off. At which point he opens a container he's been carrying around under his arm and asks if I'd like to try some ostrich jerky, then points out the nifty pair of ostrich leather cowboy boots he's wearing. He ended up going out of the ostrich business for other reasons but he's certainly got a nice pair of boots! And I still laugh at how he told the story.

consent from owners? respecting property rights? Japan, you're doing it wrong.

Mr. Right: Funny CSB

He only lost the one. He got out of the business because his "partner" who was going to sell all the fertilized eggs for vast sums of money turned out to be a shyster and took all the eggs and may have even hatched them but never forked over any of the money. Lawsuits were involved because my acquaintance's wife convinced him that baseball bat negotiations would, while making him feel much better about the situation, only land him in jail. He won the case only to find out that his "partner" had no money. The "partner's" ex-wife, with whom the "partner" apparently still shares a conjugal relationship, appears to have done pretty well at some venture or other but the "partner" is always dead broke. At the time of the CSB, my acquaintance could be funny about it. It's been several years now but it would probably still not be in anyone's best interest to mention ostrich to my acquaintance. From what others have told me, mentioning ostrich makes a particular vein in his temples start to throb and from there things go downhill pretty fast.
