Wow. Just imagine how big the truck must have been to have contained 1.7 million playbooks.

Ghastly: Wow. Just imagine how big the truck must have been to have contained 1.7 million playbooks.

Heh.
$1 a piece.

The truck was loaded in Plainfield and was headed toward Waterloo, Ontario in Canada.

I guess they were all returns.

Joke's on them. The punishment for stealing Blackberry Playbooks is owning Blackberry Playbooks.

Why does this feel like an episode of the Duke's of Hazard? Bo and Luke will get framed and Boss Hog will get a bag of money for making the tablets disappear.

I'm thinking this was a clever scheme to get rid of unsold inventory and maybe collect insurance money. The playbooks weren't exactly moving. I happen to be in charge of the inventory chain for 25 mobile retail stores and can tell you that _not one_ Playbook sold in those 25 stores. Not a one. Nada.

Samsung and Motorola tablets sold okay, about as well as iPads, in case you were wondering.

Is it the same playbook that the Colts have been using?

Samwise Gamgee: The playbooks weren't exactly moving.

They lowered the price to $199 in Canada and you can't find one anywhere. Maybe that's why they were shipping them to Waterloo.

So at MSRP ($400) that's 4250 of them. I wouldn't buy one, but a stolen one for $70 wouldn't be bad. Can they be made to run android?

so let me get this straight: for the cost of a steering wheel lock this could have been prevented?

that driver should be made to repay the cost of his "stolen" load
since he basically gave it away.

The part of the headline about the cops not bothering to go after him is kinda funny because it happened in Chesterfield. A chesterfield is a couch. They didn't want to get up.

Oh never mind, I'm just easily amused.

this way they can claim retail price on the insurance forms

I love my playbook, what's with the hate?

DrFuko: I love my playbook, what's with the hate?

I won a Playbook at my office Christmas party. Good little device, all things considered. Yes, the downside is huge - it's never about the hardware, it's all about the software support, and considering that there is no integrated e-mail app yet. And they are severely behind on promised updates, like Android support.

But, for the everyday stuff, it's solid. Decent web browser, some of the best internal speakers you'll find on a tablet, and overall a solid multimedia device.

It still boggles the mind that RIM - a company that built its empire on enterprise e-mail - released a tablet without an integrated e-mail app.

I would have thought that that would be the first thing they would have built when designing the freaking thing.

Stupid thieves didn't think their cunning plan through

I think it came down to BB not wanting to offer email that wasn't tied into their BES and BIS servers, so they came up with the stupid solution to require a Blackberry handset be paired with the Playbook. The managers responsible for their server business would just not stand to see an IMAP (or God forbid Exchange) based email app, so at the end of the day their existing business model basically torpedoed their hopes of capturing a new customer base.

Follow up from police: "go ahead and keep 'em. No one else wants them".

The one thing it has going for it over the rest in my opinion is the size. I find the 7" comfortable and think the 10 is too clunky for the ipad.
It does have a link to GMail right out of the box. Granted it is the mobile webpage but at least it is there. For me I can't wait for the following:
Android support (Feb 2012)
MKV support (it's in Beta right now)
Would LOVE to have network share access (SMB and NFS). I hate having to copy stuff to it when I have a perfectly good NAS willing to provide files.

Hipsters hate on Blackberry ANYTHING. It's only hip to like Android and Apple, and Android is starting to get some hate. I have a Playbook and I think it is a dandy little device. I've played with the other tablets, too, and while I like certain things about the others, the smaller size is more comfortable to me. I have some app envy, but most of what I want is available.

Bottom line is that I'm a meta-hipster and simply hate everything hipsters like because...ummm...fark them.

It's not an iOS or an Android device. So it's cool to hate.

In the 7 inch size range, I personally think the Kindle Fire is the better deal. Android support right out of the box, plus a decently shocked app store and the ability to sideload .apks if you need something that isn't on Amazon. Hell, you can even get Exchange support on it if you buy Touchdown. The software still needs a few tweaks, which Amazon has promised soon, but overall it is a pretty nice tablet for the price point (I've had once since launch). Unless you are an existing BB user, the Kindle just offers a better overall app and service ecosystem, which for me makes up for slightly less impressive hardware.

I still can't believe you can't print with a playbook. It is a business device... and rather useless for those who would like to use a mobile printer in the field like you can with the phones.

But, you can't print PDF or website from a playbook, which is really what I'm after... Instead, you have to use the phone. Since they are joined at the hip for email support right now, I guess that is the option people have to use.
