"Unsafe? Yes, it's unsafe. There had been an incident that happened in the spring where some youth were on the roof throwing rocks and damaged cars in our parking lot."

This building is only unsafe when people fark with it.

Though prices for scrap are appealing,
And plenty is there for the stealing,
A wise man recalls
That thieving the walls
Leaves little to hold up the ceiling.

So it's unsafe because they damaged cars in your parking lot, not because they're standing on a severely damaged roof that could collapse quite easily...

What really astonishes me about these scavengers is how little they understand about value. When GM went in bankruptcy they abandoned entire plants full of functional equipment, tools and the like. Just closed the doors, locked the gate and walked away. You're talking about functional CNC machines, drill presses, welding equipment, you name it. If I had the opportunity to break into such a place, I'd use one of the functioning fork lifts to load a functioning CNC machine center onto one of the functioning flat bed trucks and drive the thing over to my garage. Within a couple of weeks I'd be in business manufacturing something that I could sell on eBay. These guys break in, smash open a CNC machine center to pull out the copper wires. Smash open the fork lift to get the copper radiator and smash open the dash of the flat-bed to get at the brass heater core. I mean, WTF?

so they found a nice piece of red iron going from the floor to the ceiling, decided they should take it.

"They were getting into the skeletal structure, the beams that actually hold the floor up. They literally just tore it apart,"

This was beyond the idiocy of copper thieves. They were taking load bearing beams!

What really sucks is that when thieves just damage and steal shiat for the raw materials, it costs the property owner more to replace whatever it is that they broke than what the thieves will get at the scrap yard.

You uhh, you assume they can operate a CNC machine. To them it could just be another big piece of indecipherable machinery that could do anything. You also assume they have a place to take it, the know how and were withall to make something with it and a computer to access and sell said items on ebay. In the end it's just easier to rip out the guts and sell 'um. That, afterall IS something they know how to do.

from what I read the roof wasn't damaged enough to collapse until they starting ripping metal out of the supports. It sounds like the two men had been at this for months.

Why am I not suprised that the locals knew this was going on and did nothing? Resident: Hey, there are kids on top of the building in question throwing rocks, let's call the cops and try to get the building demolished do absolutely nothing that will prevent this from happening again.
Resident: Hey, there are two guys endangering themselves and others by taking out the load bearing struts in the walls, maybe we should call our councilman/woman and get the building torn down wait for the building to fall on their heads and watch the media-frenzy aftermath.

/in my large city, the damn buildings get torn down frequently
