Wow. Its like someone's pounding on the IRS's door and screaming "Please take away my tax-exempt status!"

And I still can't think of an actual Catholic official in the USA that's gone to jail over the child sexual abuse scandal.

Cardinal Bernard Law was about to be indicted in MA.

He got transferred to the Vatican, immediately, and wasn't pursed. This cost the then AG the governorship in 2006

Very sad that they would try to turn to government to legalize their bigotry...

If they're against gay marriage, don't get one. But don't prevent others from getting it done. God gave us free will.

Actually, it's more like an 1860-year-old conspiracy... "See, so there's this story that's been passed down verbally for the last 140 years or so. Huh? Oh, don't worry, I'm sure the story is exactly the same after all this time. Anyway, it's about this dude Jesus, he was a mortal, but he was also the son of God (and a ghost, but we'll get into that later). No, no, not your heathen god, the real God. And believing in him is the only way to get into heaven, which is this totally biatchin' place. All you have to do to get there is read this book and do what it says. What? You can't read? Well, let me take care of that part for you. Um... let's see... so we need to start by you giving me 10% of your money. What? You don't want to? I mean, you do want to get into Heaven, right? Did I mention that the alternative is eternal burning in a fiery pit? No, really, it says so right here. Honest."

prayer and sacrifice for the success of this most current struggle to defend marriage with our civil constitution. Without such deliberate prayers and sacrifices, our efforts will be in vain. But with God, all things are possible

Because, Lord, stopping the marriage of people who have the homosexual impulses you gave them is clearly the most important thing we should be praying about.

And even though you are both omniscient and omnipotent and clearly have a grand design for everything, us collection of hicks getting together and asking you for shiat is going to change your plan and more importantly, legislation on this microscopic dot inside a microscopic dot inside a microscopic dot of a planet. And I might have to roll of Shabbos. It's that farking kraut in charge of scheduling. But I that's a separate issue. One thing at a time. Amen.

They have their own damned country whose laws they control. Why do they have to control ours.

Look, if the Church wants to be against it, fine. They don't have to have gay marriages. No one is trying to force them to recognize gay marriages. The Church has their own rules and restrictions over what they consider to be marriages anyway. That's fine.

But don't push to change the secular law to prevent people who want to get married from getting married. That's just obnoxious.

2011-12-16 05:23:47 PM
if god wanted marriage to be defined as such, couldn't he just take care of it himself instead of requiring these people to pray to him to do it?

So after all he did the Vatican continued to protect him from facing justice? Disgusting. Holy church, my ass.

Somacandra asks a good question. Wiki indicates that a small number (new window) of been sentenced to prison though usually a civil settlement has been the only result.

Kind of like the Public School System and Youth Sports amirite?

shivashakti: They have their own damned country whose laws they control. Why do they have to control ours.

They aren't trying to "control" our country any more than say a group of environmentalists are, or non-profits when they get together to discuss how current policy will effect them. As a Representative Republic, they deserve to be represented as well, no? I agree, the Bishop was being a bit of a douche by orchestrating a prayer around this, I don't see any type of foul play here. They aren't broadcasting commercials attempting to sway the opinion of people who don't attend the church, so it really doesn't violate their tax exempt status. It's simply an expression of their belief system within the context of those particular rituals.

Coming to a certain conclusion regarding public policy based upon your personal religious beliefs is no more heinous than coming to that same conclusion simply because you think it's the "right" thing to do if one were an Atheist.

timujin: Actually, it's more like an 1860-year-old conspiracy...

To be fair, archeologists are currently putting the birth of Christ right around 84BC +/- 5-10 years. So 2000 year old conspiracy was closer to the truth (though not a conspiracy) Granted if you take it back to the earliest records of the tribes of Judea before the written word, it goes back quite a bit longer, but it's all pretty academic really.

We already have laws based on religious bullshiat, stopping gays from marrying is just one. For example, for what reason do liquor stores open at 11:00am on Sundays other than religious bullshiat? Do you have any idea what alcohol withdrawals are like? Farking religion.

Mugato: For example, for what reason do liquor stores open at 11:00am on Sundays other than religious bullshiat?

The owners like to sleep in at least one day out of the week too?

I'm not arguing that many of the local laws are based around a communities religious beliefs, but again, that's how it works in a Representative Democracy, even a secular one like ours. The majority of the people in the community elect a representative that they feel will craft public policy around their preferred beliefs and surprise, surprise, when the majority of a community are highly religious folks, it stands to reason that the candidate that follows in those beliefs will become elected, and, (gasp), represent them. Religious folk have same right to partake of our Democracy as non-religious, within certain guidelines and a prayer said inside of a church during mass regarding public policy does *not* break those guidelines.

Oh and Principal is spelled incorrectly in my previous post, yes, yes I know - my argument is now invalid :(

For a group that believes in a Zombie and cannibalism they are awfully concerned about the tax code for others as long as they do not have to pay any themselves. It is time churches started to pay some share, I have heard about people saying something about fairness and taxes.

I was raised Catholic, went through 12 years of Catholic schools and my kids go to Catholic schools. Never, not once, have or my kids been told that being gay is wrong. No herpaderp on evolution either.

Minnesota Catholics must be assholes.

2011-12-16 05:53:14 PM
As someone that is on a church "Marriage Task Force", this is BS.

The church can teach that something is or is not acceptable. The cannot push for a specific ballot measure or vote. I'm trying to be very careful; at our church, we cannot say that people should vote for gay marriage. We can, however, say that there is nothing wrong with it, that people should be legally equal, and we can say that people should vote their conscience.

Are you praying that we have a Constitutional amendment to ban divorce too?
