If one is paranoid enough, it can be seen as an attempt to game the validity of the 2012 election results. 2012 will not be as big a blow-out, either electorally or popularly, as 2008. If the GOP could get Obama removed from ballots in states he wouldn't win anyway, they skew the popular vote. They can make a big to-do about his removal not mattering since he wouldn't win anyway* to justify why the mater is not important. But it will cut significantly into Obama's popular vote totals, since even Alabama didn't vote 100% of McCain. Going by 2008 numbers, if you dropped Obama's popular vote gains from just the Southern states that went McCain, Obama loses the popular vote by ~1 million votes. In 2012, if Obama wins the electoral , but loses the popular, are you seriously going to say the GOP is going to shrug and walk away; or, are they going to howl for blood at the discrepancy, claiming fraud by Obama, even if the discrepancy is one of their making?


* And that line of reasoning is bull anyway - we actually hold elections because people are not statistical automatons.
