you know, submitter, i used to make fun of them, too... until i bought one (i'm on my second 3-series). and i will admit to feeling a bit douche-y just driving it, so i try to be extra-courteous on the road. and i really hate it when i see another BMW driver cut somebody off or otherwise acting assholish. but, goddamn, they drive better than just about any other car out there.

They're great cars, but I don't understand why they don't have turn signals on them.

I shudder to know what the X6 compensates for.

But Infiniti seems to be giving BMW a douche run with their stupid Xmas commercials in which the Infiniti douche "outwits" the BMW douche to the news of attractive lease rates.

The message is: for only $3,000 down and $300 a month, you can be the kind of douche who one-ups other douches. Won't that be awesone!?

You nailed it. I think the major problem is other people expect us to be douches act like we've insulted them. Since I got my M3 - with the black Novillo leather and performance package (no duel clutch I do know who to drive) - I've had the worst time with tailgaters. This morning I was just driving along listening to the premium sound system minding my own business and this driver in a Taurus was all over me. I swear no matter what I did he couldn't have been more than a foot from my front bumper.

Sounds like an average commute for me.

On topic though. Yesterday there was a "dream car" thread and at least 30% of all responses were BMW. Guess there is a lot of douches here on fark...

Disclaimer: I picked a BMW in the thread too.

some people have money to spend on expensive cars. some people think that's valuable. I'm not ready to call BMW owners douches just because they own BMWs. It's a luxury car at a premium price.

I feel comfortable calling hummer owners douches though. it's a utility car at a premium price. that's just silly. that's like spending a mansion price on a trailer (and being proud of yourself afterwards).

/ doesn't have a car... my kia went swimming one day when it rained too hard.
// I don't really care that much about cars; I would not buy an expensive car because it is too much of a liability. I dislike exposing my economic value to strangers because I do not want to attract criminal minded entrepreneurs to alter the effects of my possessions.
// but, BMW owners do not bother me unless they are younger than me... then they are douches. I mean, I'm 30... someone in their 20s should not have a BMW.

when I read this, I thought troll the moment the leather came up. but, this is some new, subtle form of troll, the likes of which fark has not seen before... there's trolldom inherent, but a gentle delivery and inoffense subject matter that beguiles the unsuspecting farker.

this new evil... it's an evil born of the void between fark and snark. makes me think of words like riparian, although that word has absolutely no relevance here. I just like it, and I usually think of riparian (the word) when unforeseen evil of a subtle nature arrives. perhaps that betrays my distrust of river beds and the difficulty of classifying their owners when the river is navigable.

BMWs aren't driven by douches. They're driving by assholes who think certain traffic rules don't apply to them, like signalling to change lanes, or speed limits, or stopping for red lights.

I want one.

2011-12-16 11:58:55 AM
The thing that really annoys me about BMW owners is that 99% of them NEVER wash their cars. I swear, 9/10 BMWs I see on the road (almost all of which are black or silver for some reason) are caked in dirt, usually have lots of swirl marks, and have 10 pounds of brake dust on the rims.

When I used to work as a car detailer, every BMW we ever worked on was just as described - filthy. FFS, you pay that much for a car, wash it!.

To be fair, the majority of Texans (BMW and non-BMW drivers alike) exhibit these traits.

It took a move to Texas to witness my first (and now many more) red light accident. Turn signals are non-existant and if you're not doing 75+, you're getting tailgated (in the middle and right lanes no less..left-lane slowpokes deserve it).

I'm not even including the number of asshats I see on a daily basis that are texting while driving....but that's a national epidemic

2011-12-16 01:57:02 PM
If it takes you more than 3 miles to pass a semi, you deserve some tailgating...

I'll speed up a bit to get out of the way of fast movers I see in the rearview, why is it so farking hard to do the same?

2011-12-16 01:58:10 PM
I would probably still be a BMW owner if my local dealership weren't so poorly run and had interest in actually servicing the expensive car they had sold me.

Instead I went to Audi seven years ago and haven't looked back. Now it appears, however, that the douche crowd is buying Audi just as much as BMW. :/

You're assuming people are:

A) Competent, B) Paying Attention, C) Care, D) Are not trolling

I drove about 150 miles yesterday and for the most part didn't run into any truly ignorant left lane bandits - somewhat of a surprise, but at my exit some dipshiat pulled onto the highway cutting me off then couldn't figure out why I was on the horn at him.

i bought an m-sport 328 this year, mainly because i wanted to get the last of the normally aspirated straight sixes for which BMW has been known for 40 years. i could've bought a 335, but i opted for the non-turbo, and i'm glad i did (plus, it allowed me to get all the optional extras i wanted).

i'm sure BMW's 4-bangers are awesome. but there's just something about a straight six...

someday I will get a M3... Its either that or a lotus elise... Not sure which.

At current funds
I Test drove A4, 3-Series and the lexus 350?. Ended up getting a 3 series on consignment. I love me some repos.

3 series outshines the competition in road feel, and the inline 6 is damn near bulletproof. IMHO the power assisted steering makes the A4 and the 350 feel like a cheap car.

yup. my old 3-series (a 2001), was a fantastic car that was barely broken in when i traded it in at 140,000 miles. when looking for a new vehicle, i test drove mercedes c-class and an audi a-4. neither came close to the fit, finish and feel of the 3-series.

the only shiatty thing was, i had to order mine, because nobody drives sticks here in the US anymore. but a 6-speed mated to a straight-6 bimmer is a recipe for driving heaven.

We owned a 6 speed 135i for a while. Simply amazing engine & brakes, coupled with a rather overrated suspension and mushy gearbox (seriously, I'd read over and over about how beemer gearboxes are the gold standard... I just don't get it), and an interior that started to rattle apart after about 10k miles.

Maybe there's a huge quality difference in the higher models... but I wasn't particularly floored in the money vs. quality department with that car.

We've got a 2011 135i and it's an awesome car even in the handling department and keeps up with the M3 surprisingly well. I think the problem is likely how it was aligned. Did you have the understeer dialed out? They're adjusted that way from the factory since it's safer for the average idiot on the road.

A fraction of the douche, all the handling and joy of driving a BMW.

I used to have a BMW. It was a great car except for the part about how it needed constant expensive maintenance. It made no sense given all the hype about the famed "German engineering." Then I recalled that Germany lost World War II in no small part because its farking tanks broke down all the time, and suddenly it all made sense.

I'm seeing a lot of competition in the douche niche from Audi.

The Dog Ate My Homework: I used to have a BMW. It was a great car except for the part about how it needed constant expensive maintenance.

it also depends on the series. the 5 and 7 series are notorious for needing maintenance. the 3 series tends to be much more reliable. toyota reliable? no. but more so than VW, audi, mercedes and just about any american car. but, yes, it requires regular maintenance.

one of the reasons i bought new was the free scheduled maintenance for 4 years (i upped it to 6).

2011-12-17 12:50:25 AM
I personally don't care for BMWs, but you'd have to be pretty clueless to not acknowledge that the extra expense is paying for a much more comfortable ride. If anything, it's compensating for spending years driving around in cars with crap suspension and cheap hard plastic interior. If you can afford it, why not spend a little extra to make your ride a little more enjoyable?

Besides, you can pick up a 5 year old 3-series in good shape for like 10 grand. It's not like anyone looks at BMW and thinks "Ooh, high roller" anymore. Now, if only their drivers would realize this.
