Hmmm... I'm no crash scene investigator... but judging by the way that cruiser is wrapped around that palm... I'm going to guess he was going faster than 45.

FTFA: Following the crash, Delray Beach police instituted additional driver training for their officers, police spokeswoman Nicole Guerriero said.

Good idea. I think all police officers should receive advanced drivers' training since, you know, they're allowed to go faster than the rest of us. They might want to start such training at the academy level, though. Too late for this one.

Why do people so often go for hyperbole in these situations? He may have been a great guy, but that's one hell of a statement to say there is no greater person. Like, ever.

The good news is his remains will be placed in state behind a desk back in the office and will continue to collect monthly salary while a committee decides whether the relative velocity of the earth to the police cruiser was in violation of any laws of causality and thus the cause of the crash. Einstein's preserved braincells meanwhile will be ordered not to leave the city pending possible charges.

KnightsFolly: Strange. I seem to recall "independent experts" implying that speed wasn't a factor just a day after the accident(^).

Seems their main point of contention was how far the tree went through the car. Based on that, and without the computer data, he seemed to have been going "about 45 mph" at impact.

This new article says he was going 70 "moments" before the impact. Depending on how much the author wants to sensationalize speed as a possible factor, "moments" could mean pretty much anything, and speed may not have been a true factor after all. Regardless, there's no excuse for going 25+ just for the hell of it.

At least HE was killed and not some innocent person next to him while he was going 25mph over.

It never ceases to amaze me... the number of cops who will drive in excess of 100mph to catch up to someone driving 7 over the (65) limit just to give them a state revenue enhancement certificate.

//about safety? I fail to see it.

While this is tragic, it's hard to feel sorry for the guy. He, of all people, should know the ramifications of driving distractions, excessive speed and the benefits of a seatbelt.

It's not.

CSB:

My father was pulled over once, because he flashed his headlights to warn others of a speed-trap the police had laid out about a few block prior, which many of them slowed down to the speed limit, or lower

The cop said he could have taken him to jail and would have, but didn't because he had a child with him (I was about 9 or 10 at the time)

So yes, it's more about collecting the flow of money, and it is about safety.

Most of the city cops in Pinellas County have a built-in link in their cars, I guess... see 'em parked in all kinds of places, sitting there playing farking Facebook games on their in-car computers. Yeah, awesome job there, donut vacuum. You're setting a really great anti-gang example for the kids by parking your dumb ass on the corner and sitting in the car playing Mafia Wars.

I agree, on what charge, because the statue they normally use is the one preventing people from having flashing lights, impersonating a police vehicle... There's currently a class action lawsuit going on here in FL over it...

The cop was just being a dick, and I guess since my dad warned others of the speed-trap, than cut into his ticketing quota

Basically the cop said that by warning of a speed-trap, you actually put them it danger, because they could have gotten into a wreck, if they were speeding.

Now try to explain THAT logic.

Varies from state to state (some say it's perfectly legal, others say you can't do it at all). Here's some info on it: Wiki (pops)

If you're pulled over for flashing your lights, just say you saw a deer on the side of the road and was warning other drivers.

If cops see you flashing your lights (even if completely legal), they can pull you over just to waste your time because they're vengeful dicks when it comes to screwing with their revenue.

2011-12-16 10:43:01 AM
I did get pulled over a few years ago for flashing my lights. Problem was, I wasn't really flashing them. My 2000 GMC Sonoma will turn off the day running headlights when the turn signals are used. I was on the freeway changing a couple of lanes and signaled twice within a relatively short period of time. A cop sitting on a bridge saw this and decided to come after me... mach 5.

Now, I disable the day running lights every time (press the dome light button 4 times and listen for the chime). No more false accusations.

I never really understood why all trees aren't removed from roadways...or at least guardrailed.
It's bad enough they put up street lights with no protection around them...just asking for deaths.

Turn on logging and capture everything. Use Wireshark to capture packets. Then, turn him in for theft.
