Back when Clinton was in office, the US drug czar came over here and tried to tell the Dutch government that we need to update our drug laws (hint: check how much drugs-related violence there is in the US vs. here in NL).

They have started the progam down in Maastricht (they're getting tired of all the Belgians and French coming over to buy weed to take home), but the mayor of Amsterdam's been saying he'll fight the ban.

On the other hand, they are shutting down a lot of the red light district.

TFA: Even as the conservative Dutch government toughens its tolerance policy on marijuana, the AP notes, it is bucking worldwide trends by taking an increasingly relaxed stance toward tobacco smoking.

It's amazing what can be bought with piles and piles of money: yachts, mansions, politicians...

It's particularly amazing what can bought with piles and piles of money in places where drugs and prostitutes are essentially legal.

Sigh. I hate the Puritans.

You don't need weed to fark their hookers. Some other places it might be necessary.

/Otherwise, go to Portugal. And shoot up the heroin, they don't care. Alot less expensive to visit, anyways

You can just go a few hours east to Hamburg if they try to take away the hookers, same eastern european whores in the Hamburg red light district as there are in Amsterdam, and less obnoxious American tourists. (Flip side: more obnoxious British bachelor parties).

We, as a society, really need to get over this need to try to control the behavior of others. If consenting adults want to smoke a plant, have sex with another adult (regardless of gender), or whatever else the case may be, it's none of your or the government's business as long as they aren't harming anyone else or placing them in harms way (ie driving under the influence, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, etc.). I'll never understand why some people get so bent out of shape over petty crap like this. Let it go. There are bigger problems in the world than some guy sparking a doob after work.

Check out Portugal's stance on drugs. Seems like it might be working for them.

yeah, I think back when I lived in switzerland, about ten years ago, there was talk of legalizing pot for sale to citizens.

basically, you were limited in the quantity you could buy and you had to be a resident/citizen. Because, they wanted to smoke pot but they didn't want druggie tourists. (I moved away from switzerland before they voted on the issue, if it ever come up to vote... so I don't know what their law is today)

I feel like there impediment to thinking, like a toothpick lodged in the brain of people on this planet, that creates this unreasonable need to control the lives of others in regards to smoking marijuana. And that if I could only just reach in there with tweezers and gently remove it they would wake up and realize that it's none of their business and does not effect them.

csb tiem.

I was in the 'dam in 2007 for five days and i really didn't see too many people acting obnoxious. they stopped serving alcohol in coffee shops years ago. it was the alcohol + weezy 'spins' resulting in vomiting 'murricans that was considered obnoxious and annoying, afaik.
we had to smoke tobacco outside UNLESS it was a shake joint or a euro style spliff we rolled ourselves from their bags.

another problem was new or infrequent smokers going over there and whacking 2 huge spliffs with their friends and then having a panic freakout from the strength of the weed compared to the mexican poo buttbrick they smoked once or twice at State College, US State.

also the mushroom freakouts, etc. people go over there ready to party and underestimate the substances. hood rats trying to sell fake crack and hard drugs to tourists were also a minor problem, although i was only approached once. i actually felt safer in the amsterdam red light than i felt the entire time i was in switzerland!!

You can still buy a joint and smoke it at a place that serves booze (if they let you, plenty will) though.

I agree the alcohol is more of a factor with the obnoxious than the weed; hell, I was one of them.

I was drunk off my ass wandering around Amsterdam, a few Muslims came up behind me, thinking I was British, started kicking me in the ass as I walked (only time I've ever been f'd with in my life), I just kept walking/stumbling. A little while later a homeless Paki, that I gave some cash to the day before to help me find my hotel, came up to me and pointed me in the right direction. If it wasn't for him I probably would have had to sleep off the drunk on bench till I could see/think straight.

DNRTFA But I have this theory about how the Dutch are secretly trying to take over the US. Take a look around at all the wind farms going up. Who builds windmills? The Dutch thats who! By taking over the energy industry they will eventually control the entire United States. And when they do watch out brother we will all be wearing wooden shoes and from what I hear they arent that comfortable. Youve been warned!

The ban would help reduce global pollution caused by people who care more about their travel enjoyment than they do the planet.

Phil Moskowitz: It was such a singularly retarded notion coming from the Netherlands that I suspected some kind of American coup.

Well according to the papers over there even if they pass the government law the local municipalities don't have to follow that law and could still sell to whomever they wanted.

And on an unrelated subject, does Amsterdam have the law like the USA where any person born there is automatically a citizen and their parents are legal citizens as well?

Seriously talked to the gf about knocking her up then going over there when its close to birthin time.

Myself and a bunch of friends were in Amsterdam for the World Cup in 08. There were So many tourists there it was crazy, a party on the streets every night. With that being said, every American we ran into were just happy to be having fun in a laid back country. The British and Germans on the other hand were basically trying to start fights with everyone within swinging distance. I almost got my ass kicked by a bunch of 6' 5" British goons in the street because I walked to close to them. They followed me and my friends yelling some gibrish in the queen's english for 3 blocks before they gave up and started yelling at another group of people to start a fight.

What didn't I see there? A police presence. Not a single cop was on the streets to keep the peace. Maybe they should start there instead of banning tourists.

With that said, we then went on to Berlin, Germany to watch the final. After the game, the entire center of Berlin was shut down for one huge party. Know what I saw there? Fully armed riot gear laden cops with MP5's on every street corner. Not a single fight was started that day.
