I saw the new special and I've gotta say that Schultz's kids/estate definitely get the spirit or Charlie Brown.

It was a little overboard on the female stereotyping, but it was dark, depressing, nihilistic and surrealistic. Like Camus, with puppies and children.

The first version of the special that aired on CBS not only included a brief announcement of Coca-Cola's sponsorship in the closing credits, but it also carried a product placement in the show's opening titles. As Charlie Brown and Linus are being tossed around by Snoopy while ice skating, Linus crashes head-on into a sign advertising the popular soda. The scene has since been cut due to expired advertising contracts and the sign was replaced with one that read "Danger." (Check out the original scene on the left.)

"Scene on the left" uses the "Danger" sign.

Yes, yes. A comic that features children suffering from depression and cripplingly social anxiety is essentially a commercial for toys.

I've always wondered if the religious segments ever caused a stir. Every year I watch it and every year I'm struck by the odd and sudden shift in tone between the cynical party atmosphere and Linus' earnest recitation of an entire bible passage. Even being as anti-theistic as I am, it's easy to appreciate because it provides a stark contrast to the other kids and their "commercial" outlook on the whole thing. I may not be a fan of religion, but I'm even less a fan of commercial debauchery, and that scene is always a nice touch.

Their rendition at the end around the tree is just weird and misplaced though....

The reason it "aged badly" is due to comparison to the stuff we have today, like the nauseating "Prep & Landing" and thoroughly stomach turning Shrek the Halls. 1965 production and television animation simply cannot compare to today's fare.

Back when we only had 13 TV channels, they would group the holiday specials into the last 2 weeks before Christmas, and as everybody and anybody did not have VCRs until the mid 90s, if you missed the shows you were screwed, as they didn't repeat.

You know the scene where CB and Linus go to find a tree and Linus says something like "I suggest we try those (stitchlights/ditchlights/SOMEthing). What is he saying there? Is it "searchlights" and just came out odd? I've been wondering about this for at least 30 years.

It's a well know fact that William Shatner was the acting coach for many of the youngest tykes involved with this endearing production.

Network execs didn't like a Christmas special because it has stuff about Christ in it. Coca-Cola wanted to put placement ads in a special that decries the commercialization of Christmas.

The Irony tag is strong with this one.

That's 5 .. the kid whose dad decided that since everyone was treated like a number, they might as well use numbers for names. The two girls in red dresses on either side of him are his twin sisters, 3 and 4. None of them appeared in any other Peanuts specials or movies after this .. though, 5 did pop-up in the comic strip, occasionally.
