So, skidmarks would just fall out on the floor?

markie_farkie: So, skidmarks would just fall out on the floor?

I was thinking of the myriad reasons this could be revolutionary, from clothing to exterior building materials to auto glass, and you come in here with skid marks.

Bravo, good sir. Bravo.

/pretty sure skid marks are going to stick to this thread just fine

How much longer does my lazy ass have to hold out for this advancement. (Also will it come in a spray on solution)

/Horribly neglects his laundry

Well I WAS going to take the high road with this:

But figured hey, this IS Fark, goddammit!!

Ooh. Tough call. That movie sticks the landing. I thought this all sounded familiar.

Oooooh, it's on Netflix, too. Might have to watch it tonight.

Yeah, very want.

That's pretty cool, but just because it repels liquids doesn't mean people will stop washing their clothes. Body odours and ambient odours in the air will still adhere to clothing over time.

Although never having another dress ruined by red wine will still be nice.

I have been shipping these so called new materials for about a year now already. There is nothing really new here.

What is "laundry"?

The idea of microrobots creeps me right the fark out.

So, if your clothes don't absorb your sweat will there just be pools of sweat on the floor around people in sweaty environments? Or perhaps the sweat will collect in your shoes, staying in liquid form due to the lack of absorption? Nasty feet.

I'm not so sure about this...

Also if you DO manage to get it dirty somehow, it seems like laundry will be a lot harder to do.

I like how everyone tries to make it a humanitarian thing. Think of the poor peoples in developing countries! They won't have to do laundry by hand anymore! Yes, because surely they can afford titanium dioxide-coated clothing. Oh, they can't? Well, let's make it a priority to send out only these new, special materials to them, because that's more important than food, clean water, and medicine. Heaven forbid they're out there doing laundry. That's just cruel.

So who gets to tell the Japanese about the impending collapse of their economy when the used panty industry falls apart?

According to the brains in my department, the Titanium mixed with Silver coating is the "mother" of all anti-bacterial finishing for textiles. It is akin to having a deoderant built into your clothes.

The reason the clothes do not stain is becasue the nonosphere forms an invisible, flexible layer over the textile so that stain binding agent cannot bind with it, so it pretty much just drops off.

These nanos are gonna get everywhere, then we're gonna be in BIG trouble.
What happens when people inhale them? Nanos in the eyes?
Reminds me of a Stargate episode.

A big problem in developing countries tends to be water shortages. So no, it isn't "more important" than clean water, it's related to clean water. Less water use, and less water pollution from detergents.

I'm assuming the fabric is still breathable, so your sweat will just evaporate through the shirt into the air.

More likely to stick to your leg halfway down.

Hello, which one of my kids are you?

And when will the nanos get the clothes off the floor and neatly back in the drawers and closets?

Hate to break it to you, but titanium dioxide is extremely cheap and abundant. It's the primary pigment used in paint, sunscreen and even food coloring. Titanium dioxide. (new window)

In its nano-form it is thought to be harmful to one's health. Like little grains of sand in between your organelles. Jury's still out.

So no more articles about putting your jeans in the freezer? What will we call hippies if they're no longer smelly? What will happen to those people in the detergent commercials - they're not going to get a job in this economy. It's the end of the world a we know it...

In Japan we have NANOX.

This will be good right up until the point that those nano particles come off the clothes, go air born, and you breath them. Then much like asbestos they cause lung cancer and you die. No thanks, I think I'll wait around 40 or 50 years before trying anything with nano-tech in it that might kill me. Just long enough for the dangers and fark ups to be worked out.

A smelly hippie in clean clothes is still a smelly hippie.

If this works the way I think it will, I'll be buying this for my outdoors clothing.
So long to $200 Gore-Tex!

That ketchup and honey test in the video were useless in my opinion, would have like to see both ground in a bit and then left alone for a 2 days, like a real world situation, before they tried to wash it off.

Bought several shirts advertised like this six years ago.

They repelled liquids (including maple syrup) like champions, but collected more body hair than derranged Robin Williams fans. And the body hair had no problem collecting and emitting unpleasantly biological odors whenever inconvenient.

Sadly, they only lasted 2 years of routine washings on the recommended settings before the fabric frayed and split at every fold. Maybe the tech has advanced, but I'm not going to pay $50 per shirt again to find out.

Came for the Man in the White Suit reference, leaving satisfied and surprisingly early.

(Heard of it here a few weeks back, got it on Netflix, and as the plot unfolded all I could think about was a General Products spacecraft hull. So nerdy.)

About the sweat evaporating and leaving salt deposits: Go to any dry climate in summer and look at people who have been working outside and wearing cotton shirts and you'll see little white lines made by the salt left behind. I see this in Phoenix every summer.

That was dumb...the more obvious way that nanotech will end laundry is by allowing you to "download" and "print" new garments as easily as copying files, and then disposing of them as neatly as deleting them.

Either that, or the garments will refresh themselves on an ongoing basis, like skin.

2011-12-17 09:46:13 AM
This would make gym socks useless to teenaged boys.

2011-12-17 11:29:38 PM
Yeah, I'm sure this stuff isn't going to be toxic at all.

With my allergies my head would probably explode the moment I put one of these shirts on.
