Cool! Thank you, Bad Astronomer! It's like the blue clouds are hands separating the cosmos to get a better look at the yawning chasm that is IRS4!

/Opps, wait ...

Does the Hubble have a star filter?

That pic is glorious.

I think you're onto something here ... replace that old inkblot test with astronomy photo-reading!

Hell, astronomy photo-reading could replace a whole lootta things!

Okay, Billy, show me on the photo where the bad man touched you ...

Their "very big" version isn't very big. Is there a way to get a 1080p+ version?

The universe (like the ocean depths) scares the living crap outta me. Fascinating as hell, but you couldn't pay me enough to go venturing out (or down) there.

I'll gladly let a space camera do all the exploration for me. Beautiful pic.

How exactly did they come up with 30 octillion tons...?

i really don't see the floermoer baby. I see something like a sorceress with 2 blue flaming jets extending from her back outwards and backwards.

I tried GISing "Sharpless 2-106" to see if I could find something for my desktop (3360 x 1050). No luck yet, but Jimi Hendrix shows up at the bottom of page 2 of my results, and I got a couple of Salvadoran bank notes on page 3. Lolwut?

Can't help you with the progressive scan part, but try this for higher resolution images. Genearlly speaking, you can always dig around on their site a bit to find some better stuff.

GentlemanJ: How exactly did they come up with 30 octillion tons...?

There's a couple ways. You can study nearby objects whose mass you know to see how this is affected and this affects them in turn. In this case, the astronomers probably used the mass-luminosity relation that can give you a good ballpark mass for most stars, based on how bright it is: Luminosity ~= Mass ^ 3.5.

We can tell how bright it is, so it's trivial to deduce an approximate mass.

bigmattress: Does the Hubble have a star filter?

It has a metal frame that holds the secondary mirror in place, and light diffracts around it. They're called diffraction spikes. They're pretty, but they do sometimes get in the way of the science...

It's aliens. They saw our measly little a-bomb tests back in the day.
We just saw the result of an alien version of "watch this... Hold my beer..."

This one is 3000 x 2400, if that helps. You might trim off the border, though.
