Michael Scott: A boss is like a teacher. And I am like the cool teacher. Like Mr. Handell. Mr. Handell would hang out with us, and he would tell us awesome jokes. And he actually hooked up with one of the students. Um... and then like twelve other kids came forward. It was in all the papers. ... Really ruined eighth grade for us.

Oddly enough, with the limitations placed by the rules given, I give the tag a 3/5 proper Florida rating.

I don't know. He gets way too caught up in Mafia Wars, loses his job and his wife leaves him and takes the kids?

Anyone else get the feeling that adults using facebook to 'reach' kids has the embarrassment equivalent of a drunk Aunt dancing at a wedding?

We've had this in Sweden for a long time,
works very well at univ, having a FB group dedicated to your class to get all the news and schedule changes etc.

What's the prob, subby? Unclear on the concept of a Facebook page versus a Facebook user account?

We're talking about Port Richey. The results are predictable. Subby should've waited for the "SRO arrested for sharing pics of her foobies" story.

SRO's do not "friend" students on the page or open chat rooms with them. Students can comment on postings and SRO's can comment back. Some kids say this method of communicating with an SRO works for them.

"'Liking' a page doesn't mean I have access to anything on your page," Cpl. Morrison said. "All it means is anything I post you will be able to see."

So it's open communication that everyone can see and the SRO doesn't get access to students pages. I don't see a problem here

when highschool officials and your parents are connecting with you on facebook, that's the beginning of the end for facebook as far as social networking goes for the youngest generation on facebook, and soon a challenger will appear and banish facebook to myspace land.

That's why a lot of people have more than one account. The beginning of the end of FB for me was when my mom got on, but I've been too lazy to put the energy into another account.

Can someone tell me what a "school resource officer" is? We didn't have those when I was in school and God was in short pants.

Polite term for a police officer assigned to a public school with a mandate that stretches beyond conventional law enforcement.

They are on hand to be able to provide law enforcement functions if essential, such as searches or arrests. However, they are "resource officers" in that they are also expected to be fully aware of all appropriate and relevant programs, initiatives, and well, resources, that a school or its students could use such as anti-drug programs and relevant funding, counseling programs, mentorship & apprenticeship programs, or food banks, depending on various students needs.

Basically they are there as a combination of police officer and social worker.

Oh, a school resource officer is a POLICE officer?

Thought it was the person who's job it was to BUY things for the school.

Thank you Silverstaff. I have learned something today.

I'm a teacher and I have two facebook accounts - one for Katie (where I have all of my personal stuff) and one for Mrs. A (which is available for students to friend). I set the teacher one up before it was easy to use facebook as a "page," which I would do now, but what I have in place works well. I don't lurk on student pages or request them as friends, but it's available for them if they want to ask me a question about an assignment or something. I check it about once a night. I also use it to post reminders like, "Hey, sophomores, your essays are due tomorrow." The kids seem to like that I'm on there.
