Good, the F-22 was a waste of money, designed to fight a war that will never happen. It was the real-life version of Superiority.

It's only a matter of time.

FTFA: Despite being one of the finest fighter jets ever created, the F-22 has had a sad story of failures, from falling apart because of bad glue to failures in the oxygen supply, which grounded the entire fleet earlier this year. This problem stopped the Raptor from participating in the operation against Gaddafi's ridiculous air forces, which means that it has never seen any real live combat.

While that's true, virtually all successful military aircraft has had their share of teething problems. The P-51 had its share: initial Allison engine had poor altitude performance, issues with the guns jamming, radiator corrosion problems, etc.

Also, there is a distinct chance that the F-22 or a derivative may be manufactured on this line, such as foreign military sales to the RAAF or Japanese, a 2018 Bomber alternative.

And they never got to use Death Blossom.

I'm thinking the next boondoggle is two, three years out. There's probably some high altitude drone that Boeingheedmann has been working on that's ready for primetime.

F22 was terribly useless at Yonkers.

All joking aside, As much as I know we don't need the money spent on that kind of defensive measure, I am in awe of the R&D involved to bring something like that to reality.
Now if we could move some of that brainpower into NASA. Even if it was to make real space-capable fighter craft, I'd be happy.

The F-22 is one of a handful of weapons built by the United States that congress has a full export ban on. There are NO pending sales to foreign militaries now or in the near future. One day? A very, very weak maybe. 2018 Bomber alternative is a bit more likely but in this budget environment still highly questionable.

If LockMart looks really, really strapped for cash and buys off enough congressman you just might see it exported. Of course, the buying nations would have to be able to pony up the significant sums of money to purchase it as well (which is doubtful given the world economy). In the end the F-22 is the worlds best Air Superiority fighter bar none. Built from the grounds up to battle hoards of enemy aircraft in friendly and hostile skies as well as to assist in directing/providing targeting to other fighters. Its built to fight WWIII against a large organized air force. Only one problem: World War III is an incredibly unlikely scenario.

The F-22 represents a political choice to replace an expensive old program (the F-117A) that worked and had a specific military value that is critical to our current tactile style with a plane made in better congressional districts and fulfilled none of the same mission space and was designed to thoroughly destroy a non-existent enemy air fleet.

Good riddance.

If they've ended production, I would guess that if they have no foreign sales or derivatives already lined up, then the next F-22ish machine will be even more expensive and take a long time to deliver. I am assuming end of production means loss of production personnel, drawing down of engineering teams, loss of suppliers, tooling, supplies, ... I assume many of these losses have already occurred as parts were probably delivered months and months ago.

That is, it may be impossible to re-open the line just for "a few more" F-22ish machines.

With the success of the predator drones, the writing is on the wall that UAVs are the next big thing. And really, the air superiority fighter just needs to lock on and get a missle off before the other guy gets a chance to do the same. If we had a air superiority UAV we could lose 20 of those to match the cost of one F22.

2011-12-15 03:35:48 PM
As long as Uwe Boll, Michael Bay, and Shia LaDouche away from it, I might be interested in seeing a Last Starfighter remake. Technology is so much better now that the space/fight scenes would be cool to see.

Maybe the couple from the first movie have a kid and the whole thing happens all over again?

Where do you think the tech for an air superiority drone would come from, huh? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? That's right, programs like the F22 Raptor. Amazing how that works isn't it?

A sequel (not a remake) had been in the works, a few years ago. Unfortunately, that whole project seems to have fallen apart, now. -_-

Wow?!? Really? What a very erudite response. You have blown me away with your reasoned response. Greater Internet Theory, I guess.

I'm pretty sure they can develop a UAV without the F22's specific technology. Especially as thrust vectoring, stealth paint, and all of the other technological advances required for the Raptor don't translate to an air superiority UAV. Hell, just removing the pilot completely changes the requirements for the aircraft, such as no need to concern yourself with G forces except for structural failure.

The problem I have here is the same problem I have with a lot of stuff: Why are we paying for the RD, then the repairs to fix manufacturing errors and bugs, and then more to buy the finished product?

We are getting robbed by the hundreds of billions because of stuff like this. I say no money until deadlines and finished product. Any mistakes, errors, etc are the responsibility of the manufacturer to fix, at their expense. Go over budget? no more money for you, use your own funds to complete the project.

And make certain that you spread the pork around to every politician with a hand out that you can... we're not looking for efficiency here, or economy of scale... we want as many states as we can in the pie... so that if one of them gets cold feet, they have congressmen and senators from 39 other states to answer to... that's the way you do it, baby... give everyone a taste of the good

I remember the first time my folks rented a VHS player from the video store before they became more affordable. They were large plastic, top-loading contraptions and it was cool as Hell (I can still remember that ramping up whine of the read head when you pressed Play). They got a Disney film for my little sister, The Last Starfighter for me, and Romancing the Bone for them after us kids went to bed. Little did they know their son was more stealthy than a Zandozan when it came to finding where they hid it. Popped that sucker into the player when they went to church the next morning and learned a lot more than I did from the Playboys.

/Good times

Hack goes and looks up 'finest', to see if the definition has changed drastically.

Anyone else disappointed with the death blossom? It was that never touch the red button thing and there was no real consequence when it was used. Maybe if the pilot died when used it wouldn't have been a horrible deus ex machina.

Still a great movie for me when I was a kid. The video game looked awesome and the whole moses storyline was still fresh (at least for me).

I thought it was because after you used it you were out of ammo? It expended everything in one whirling dervish?
