For my part, I find information on the Internet ten times more reliable than I can find in other media. Sure, there's garbage out there, but there's also pure gold. When other sources were screaming about the speed of light being broken, it was only the Internet sources (incl. message boards like this) urging caution.

But what do I know? I'm just a 12 year old girl looking for a sexual experience with an older man.

What if that study didn't even exist, huh? Did you ever think about that? I didn't know! So now, if I went in and made a major security issue out of it, everybody steps in. Administration steps in, and there are no exclusive rights for anybody; nobody wins. So I made a decision and it was... wrong. It was a bad study, Ripley, it was a bad study.

My daughters are in college, 19 and 35, and they always complain that their professors do not allow source articles from Wikipedia. I find that absolutely medieval. According to Wikipedia, the Encyclopedia Britannica is written by a scant 100 full time editors and a few thousand "expert" contributors. Hardly enough source input to even be considered credible in my book, yet the average college professor would take it as gospel. Wikipedia, on the other hand, is reviewed and updated constantly by hundreds of thousands of contributors who correct and approve more articles in a day than the Britannica monkeys consider all year. The only thing I miss about encyclopedias are the salesmen who'd give me candy and toys to play with outside while they spoke with my mother. They're nothing more than antiques at this point.

On the one hand, they could just scroll down to the bottom of the wikipedia and use those sources.

And on the other, other hand- maybe the professor wants them to get familiar with how research is done, how peer-reviewed journals work, and how to use the awesome resource of being able to access like every journal. For the most part Wikipedia is helpful on getting a grasp on the basics, but for anything advanced you're going to need to go to the math library, engineering library, health library, or start accessing journals with current research in the field.

If the kids can master this, they can start writing Wikipedia articles- which is every child's dream.

No kidding.

I've gotten tired of seeing "OMG! Check out this awful thing" on some blog, and then looking into it, and finding out the only source is another blog from 6 months ago, and the claim has no basis in reality.

Even a quick check of Google Scholar or THOMAS or whatever resource is appropriate to confirm/refute what is cited is all it usually takes to debunk even the most complicated of claims.

That's why I like Fark. Usually if you rifle through the comments you get a better picture of what the reality of the situation is. Just the other day there was a super alarmist story about a certain topic. Click on the thread and there were a whole bunch of people explaining WHY they were doing what they were, that they had been doing it forever and that by them NOT doing it it could cause epic damage.

Sure enough a few days later it came up in my FB feed with a bunch of people freaking out. I popped in and explained it. I think they were upset I pissed in their rageahol though because I only got one "like" and everyone else remained silent.
