The truck is a Mack Truck with a Lowboy trailer. It had a PC300 Track Excavator on the back. He said it is 75 feet long, almost 12 feet wide and over 14 feet tall; it is so wide it requires an escort permit to operate on the highway.

Why am I thinking insurance fraud here?

Yeah, but it's a bit of a drive from the Florida Keys to Mexico, unless they had a boat waiting (possible).

SurfaceTension: Why am I thinking insurance fraud here?

My first thought too- this isn't the type of thing your "average" thief could just hop in and drive away; you'd have to have someone trained to handle the rig and load, and have them know in advance where the whole setup would be, and the most opportune time to nab it.

Too coincidental.

Probably a drunk dude who thought it was an ambulance or the mob has a bunch of bodies to bury.

I can't make out the license number, but it's towing a small church. So any Chevy towing a small church, I figure that- that'd be the one.

Only way they'll catch the perp is if he turns on some getaway music.

Ummm I hate to be the Grinch here...but subby failed to use the mandatory Florida tag on this. I think according to Drew Curtis' Big Book of Internet Etiquette this post should be removed and should be resubmitted for approval with the appropriate tag.

/came for the Canyonero

Hey, we learned from Fark the other day that the place to look for these things is under a 12 foot tall bridge.

I used to work for a company that built the attachments and made cylinders for these machines. Installed them, painted the bodies and repaired them etc. We had a big one come in, big bastard, maybe JD 900 series. Dude had us do the works on it. All new cylinders, hoses, all new valves and pumps, couple of buckets and thumb attachments. Riser for the cab. Even a nice stereo installed. I think he paid upwards of $80 thousand for all the work. My boss was ecstatic, it was a big boost to his small business. The customer came in, picked it up, paid with a cashiers check and went almost two blocks with it on his lowboy trailer and was then surrounded by cops while we all watched.

Turns out the guy had stolen it from some logging company or dealership in Montana. The work was paid for. My boss was laughing all the way to the bank, and the actual owner was probably quite happy having all that cool shiat installed on his machine for free.

I still wonder how such a machine could just walk out the door like that without anyone noticing.

Wow, that dude must be some kind of saint to be able to cash in on that much good karma all at once.

I don't know the whole story. The man got his machine back with all that new stuff on it. My boss had to go testify in court. There is a huge market for the Grey market machines and an awful lot of those big excavators are traded around for cash without a clear title. We're close to the border here so many of them come in from Canada and just disappear. Such machines are almost never inspected for ownership or title and a lot of the folks who buy the old beat up machines aren't particular about it anyway..
