Cheaper and faster data storage is great. Unfortunately in the meantime service providers are doing their damnedest to make sure we pay more to transfer it anywhere.

Not a fan of flash... That whole write limitation - physically destroying part of the layer...

Pretty much this. Though you can get around it fairly easily by only using it for your unchanging load-up files (provided your load-up files aren't being frequently updated).

Luckily, flash makers are aware of the limitation and have been working on ways to fix that issue. It's only a matter of time before one maker figures it out and stomps their competition.

Failure-wise, the less moving parts in a computer, the better.

Basically this. I'm hoping memristors may turn out to allow us to make non-volatile storage that doesn't eat itself.

Flash is all right, but Superman is just as fast and can do other stuff too.

Actually, he's slower, but does have more utility.

And yet, the MBTF for SSDs is significantly better than traditional HDDs. Yes, you're physically destroying part of the drive every time you write files. For most applications, the drive is still going to last longer than a comparable magnetic drive.

Ah...on my long, LONG list of shows to eventually get to on Netflix.

True, although you have to wonder how close the average person will come to seeing a write failure on an SSD due to wear. A normal HDD has a lifespan and very few people see them die (well few compared to total volume of sales).

I think we're going to see hybrid's taking up the slack. Cheap 2.5" rotational disks mated to an SSD as a disk cache rather than nothing but SSD's; at least until the price comes down and the data density comes close to rotational disks.

Texas Memory Systems claims to not have that issue

yes, I do know someone who works there, no it's not me.

Rob_the_Irish_Bastard: Hyperdrive? With Nick Frost?

An underrated show... Not as good as Spaced or Red Dwarf, but has its moments...

I've had a few USB flash drives die... one I am still using I've had for barely 2 years... Whether they're just poor manufacturing of the chips...

Thanx in advance to anyone who can please enlighten me on that. Asking because I've considered the idea that in a couple more years, my now year old laptop and 4 year old external hard drive (used for backup, has saved my ass at least once) may be SSDs.

2011-12-17 04:00:34 PM
The real point of the article isn't that flash is better than other memory, but that solid state drives are gaining favor because of devices that rely on the cloud/always on internet, etc, plus the floods in Thailand impacting the supply of traditional hard drives and driving up the price, making SSD look better by comparison.
