Back in the 80's EMP was the least scary part of our nuclear nightmares.

Perhaps they ought to close the bases, dismantle NATO and bring the troops home where they belong before they have nothing to come home to and no way to get there.

Well, that explains the outlandish rhetoric and saber-rattling. Hey, America! Newsflash! It seems the Pakistanis don't like you much! Oh noes!

Anybody here been to Pakistan recently? I'm sure they would fare better than us, but they probably wouldn't like being EMP'd either. Maybe they should turn down that threatening tone a little bit...

TFA: Perhaps they ought to close the bases, dismantle NATO and bring the troops home where they belong before they have nothing to come home to and no way to get there.

I'm cool with that. Just take us off the #1 spot on speed dial when you find yourself in a pinch.

If Americans knew about this very real possibility, they might utterly panic. It is up to them to make their government stop angering others, tell the government to mind their own business, take care of the home front and stop interfering all over the globe.

No one seriously believes that U.S. troops overseas are "defending freedom" or defending their country. You defend your country only if you are on your own territory or very close to it, not an ocean away. Fighting terrorism? No, they are aiding and abetting terrorism, creating the conditions that give birth to more terrorists.

Perhaps they ought to close the bases, dismantle NATO and bring the troops home where they belong before they have nothing to come home to and no way to get there.

Well, um, that was an interesting way to close the article.

Unlikely, EMP's at best would affect only around 50% of electronics on the ground. Major power plants, government and military hardware is all protected against EMP surges. I know this first hand having helped design EMP proof enclosures for Raytheon that are used in Airports / Military / Government offices all across the country.

Well, shiat. That's almost worth the worldwide calamity if it rids us of them.

Of course, I might have to start paying for pr0n until the intrenets come back online, though.

hmmm - death to all hipsters or free pr0n? Considering there's a pr0n store just up the highway, I'm willing to spend a bit out of pocket.

If this was even a remote possibility, it'd be time to get a 60s 4wd. Capable and it'd run.

More like Eastern Europe/Asia's version of the Weekly World News or Debka.

Even on craziest tin-foil hat forums they ridicule that source.

I can only imagine that the US would respond by turning whoever was responsible into an irradiated puddle of goo.

America detonated more atomic bombs then anyone else in the world. Mostly on our own soil. We are also the first and only to use them on someone elses soil.

Go ahead. Try and EMP us, see what happens. Our ICBM's are old and hardened against EMP anyways. If nothing else at all works we will be able to nuke back.

Of course, targeting an EMP blast to take out all of the USA would also probably take out canada and mexico with it. That is a bit high on the collateral damage scale to make any country really use it, assuming they could get the EMP close enough to America to detonate it in the first place.

/more concerned about solar flares

What a waste of bandwidth.

I would like to see the US pull every foriegn aid dollar we send to Pakistan. That money would be better spent.....Anywhere else.

/What? They would like us less? Perhaps harbor the most wanted man in the world or actively work against us in a war zone? I'll take my chances - we wouldn't want our money "interfering in their business".

Oh, it's more than just a remote possibility. That's why all my pr0n is stored on a hardened PC, inside a shielded, underground bunker.

A missile exploding 300 miles up would have a trajectory and an origin point.

All our military hardware is hardened, including our nukes.

Repairing/replacing the damage to civilian infrastructure would be a big boost to China's economy though.

The EMP lasts for only a few seconds, but the fusing and shorting of all those millions of photo-etched circuits in your computer is permanent.
