Not quite what I expected from the headline, but... yeah.

I used to work in an office that was located immediately off of a running track (yay cheap state office space). A few years ago, they wanted to lay a new track. This meant scraping up the old track and laying new polyurethane base and then making a new track on top of that.

Well, they brought in a bunch of scrapers, little diesel powered road machinery type things with blades, to scrape up the old track down to the bare cement. Problem was, the building was built in 1912, and the only ventilation - windows at the top of the huge domed roof - long since didn't function. So, well, what's the problem? Just go ahead. It's a big room!

Yeah. So, we found ourselves getting sleepy and sick and lightheaded, called it in, turned out yay! Carbon monoxide poisoning. Running diesel vehicles in non-ventilated space, even a HUUUUUGE non-ventilated space, is not a good idea.

Turns out they had to have a crane remove the roof windows for the remainder of the project, problem solved (though with delays as of course that meant it could now rain freely into the space, ha).

Pffft. "lethal levels of carbon monoxide". Those little snowflakes just need to walk it off. If they'd breathe nothing but carbon monoxide more often, they could build up more of a tolerance for it.

Guy Who Doesnt Get The Joke: Headline Fail. Zamboni is not a food it is an ice resurfacer machine.

The source of the CO was a humidifier; but no Italian food sounds like "humidifier"

Largo Fire investigators officially determined the levels were roughly 50 percent of the point O.S.H.A. considers dangerous.

"Well maybe we should chug on over to namby-pamby land, where you can tell me all about how just half of the deadly wittle CO dose hurt your poor wittle lungs"

Pussies. It's just carbon (what we're made of) and oxygen (what we need anyway).

Fire Chief Wallace: "There were lethal levels of carbon monoxide."

...next paragraph...

Fire Chief Dixon: "Upon arrival, they found carbon monoxide levels at 96 parts per million. That's elevated -- nothing immediately dangerous to health and life..."

FTA: "This may be a mechanical failure. This is a rare occurrence," Wallace said. "There were lethal levels of carbon monoxide."

(very next paragraph) "Upon arrival, they found carbon monoxide levels at 96 parts per million. That's elevated -- nothing immediately dangerous to health and life -- but that we needed to evacuate the building," Largo Fire District Chief David Mixson said following an investigation.

Speaking of youth hockey and mortal danger, my kid's team hosted their first tournament last weekend. In the lobby of the hotel that the visiting teams were staying in, police had a shootout with a fleeing murder suspect. He had killed his babymama and his own kid.

Welcome to Missouri's capital.

At the levels they measured and the time the kids were on the ice it was all in their head and there was no immediate danger (they'd have to be there all day for that). They'd have to be in the ice rink for 6 or 8 hours to get serious symptoms. The placebo effect is strong. The fact that four ambulances were called to transport them to the hospital is a bit silly. Still, the carbon monoxide shouldn't be there, but it seems wrong to say they were "poisoned" as such doesn't match up with what is known about carbon monoxide poisoning. As the article points out OSHA regulations have a 100 ppm "ceiling" exposure and (not pointed out in the article) 50 ppm exposure continuously during the average work-day.

The article is full of fail on so many levels though (as others have pointed out). Nothing about it is correct, 96 ppm isn't 50% of the allowed OSHA levels (it is 96% for acute exposure).

Wrong kind of putty used to fix the Zamboni?
