Ok, I know this doesn't follow the usual Lebowski line of commentary, but, as a person struggling with teaching writing to 9-year-olds...

what's up with the lack of respect for the right-hand margin?

When I was in school, we were expected to maintain an equal margin on the right-hand side of the paper, to be violated only occasionally by a stray letter or two, and I'm getting kids (this year in 4th grade, last 2 years in middle school) who insist their teachers made them write all the way to the edge of the paper. They say they were scolded for "wasting paper" if they tried to observe a margin on the right.

So, Farkers of the nation/world, please help me out --- who was taught to keep a right-margin, and who not? Is it a regional thing, or a generational one? Are there any other writing instructors around here that can enlighten me?

/ I actually had a kid last year in 7th grade that was so remarkably Larry-like, it was scary.

weasil, I know what you are talking about. Now that you mention it, the margins suck. And yes, I was taught that there needed to be room on both sides.

I usually used the red line that kind of "bled through" from the other side of the paper as a guide for going to the next line.

Exactly! I really wish they would departmentalize elementary (like they do in other countries), so I could just teach math. First of all, I would suddenly be much better at my job, and second, we could eliminate a lot of the backward just-plain-wrong things that are taught to little kids, that then have to be untaught by middle and high school teachers.

There are two margins!

Best response and I get that reference.

Yes, I did not originally get the reference. I have mixed feelings about that movie. Goodman's character was awesome, but the rest, for me, was very 'meh' to downright awful.

Yes, I think D&D and ND both sucked.

Doing blue-books for exams throughout college and grad school, my opinion was always that the margin is where the lines are. If there is no given right margin (as in the picture, and the movie, and my blue-books), then the right margin was pretty much the end of the page. If professors wanted me to stop writing an inch before the right side of the page, they would have drawn a line there.
