Not in the case of Haiti. It was too deep.

Certainly didn't help the aftermath, consequences, and recovery though.

normally they are pretty decent when i've seen articles on them. i cannot believe they posted this. that's a load of shiat. and the Independant (.co.uk) posted in to. and

CORRELATION DOES NOT EQUAL CAUSATION ARTICLE IDIOTS!!!!!

these people are as dumb as global warming deniers... we don't need idiots like this on the side of science, they make everyone else look stupid be association.

The Ogallala Aquifer is unique because of the depth of water it holds: several hundred meters in places. The Haiti earthquake was about 13 kilometers deep.

I call flaming bullshiat.

2011-12-14 12:00:49 PM
and of course despite all the people in here who support science calling bullshiat on this, the deniers are going to be trotting this stupidity out that "duuurhuuur global warming isn't real!!! because X random idiots ridiculous claim!"

Also, tropical soils are the least permeable to water transport in the world. Water can't possibly penetrate to 13 km depth.

I didn't read the article but based on the headline I'm assuming that someone intentionally created a machine that would cause on earthquake

I don't believe this for a second, why would you use it on haiti?

GAT_00: Also, tropical soils are the least permeable to water transport in the world. Water can't possibly penetrate to 13 km depth.

Er, the article says the study says that the rain displaces the soil on top through mudslides, lowering the weight and changing the stress on the faults. No idea if it's plausible, of course. Then again, the idea that fracking may contribute to earthquakes also seems pretty wild, but scientists are looking into it.

Joelogon: lowering the weight and changing the stress on the faults. No idea if it's plausible, of course

i seriously doubt it is enough to make a difference.

Joelogon: Then again, the idea that fracking may contribute to earthquakes also seems pretty wild, but scientists are looking into it.

actually that makes a lot more sense. because what "fracking" means is "fracturing" - they're injecting high pressure fluids to cause the rock to break. that's a microquake. microquakes can trigger larger faults (potentially hidden/unknown) faults.

Joelogon: Er, the article says the study says that the rain displaces the soil on top through mudslides, lowering the weight and changing the stress on the faults.

Topsoil is meters thick. The earthquake was 13 kilometers underground. The weight change was negligible.

What I'm getting from all this is: Don't frack during a mudslide.

Yeah, fracking is incredibly dangerous, mudslides or not.

Personally I like the "full moon causes gravitational stress = major earthquakes" theory better than this one.

Subhead: New research confirms that extreme weather and deforestation can cause earthquakes.

Story: Of course, none of these studies establish for certain that soil erosion is the direct cause of the earthquakes, but it's an intriguing theory that may finally help to explain the correlation that exists between earthquakes and extreme weather events.

Sheesh. This passes for journalism? Seriously?

he 2010 earthquake in Haiti serves as a particularly telling example, since Haiti sits right along the path of frequent hurricanes in the Caribbean Sea. The nation also suffers from extreme deforestation, which is also a leading cause of soil erosion.

That's a rather passive way to say it. It sounds like they were walking through the ocean, minding their own business, when deforestation knocked them down and mugged them of all their trees. Or they somehow caught it from another nation.

How about "Haiti suffers the consequences of their extreme deforestation practices"?

2011-12-14 01:56:03 PM
Simplistically it seems logical to me, if the straw the breaks the fault's back gets washed away, why not an earthquake? I get that there are probably many, many factors but some of the responses in the thread make it out to be crazy on a fundamental level like they are suggesting alien technology is behind it.
