TFA: "Growth in China is expected to hold up at about 8 per cent."

What they are smoking, these guys, I want some of it.

China's economy can only grow! If you don't have your life savings invested in unregulated Chinese stocks, you are missing your chance to retire 2 years early.

Tell you what, I'll sell you an insurance policy that says if China doesn't grow 8%, you get paid. Deal?

Look for commodity prices to go up and down during the year, with no clear direction, Behravesh said.

Boy, thanks for that useful tidbit of info. How much do I owe you for pearls like that?

Is Miss Cleo now an economic analyst?

I kind of wish I'd taken some Econ classes in school, just so I'd know if the 'spew gibberish out your ass and call it a science' paradigm is actually codified in their texts, or just something economists-turned-journalists/pundits do. Economists being right about anything is just so vanishingly rare.

Yeah, that was hilarious. From the Chinese fraudcaps to the bursting of their real estate bubble, this guy must be hitting rocks if he sees another 8% next year.

Hedge fund manager Hugh Hendry has made a killing this year shorting China. He's made 52% this year alone! 52%! And he plans to continue this strategy into 2012.

A lot of economists have been right, they just don't air time.

Teachers' Edition
1) Will the United States avoid recession? A - Maybe, but only by sliding into a full blown depression over the next 15 years. Otherwise, no.

2) What's next for the Euro zone? A - Let's just call it a 'reorganization.'.

3) What about Asia? A - With their two major markets in (at best) recession for the foreseeable future, and prospective customers tired of buying poorly made crap, their fate is pretty much sealed.

4) Which way will commodity prices go? A - Sharply lower demand should mean lower prices. **Should** mean, not **will** mean.

5) Will inflation be a worry? A - No; steep inflation is pretty much an inevitability - hell, it's happening right now.

2011-12-14 05:44:48 PM
1) euro breaks up
2) world wide depression
3) lost decade
4) WW3
5) killer asteroid / super volcano ends all life on earth

My prediction: in 2012, I will still want more money.

2011-12-14 07:38:39 PM
Just remember this: if financial journalists were any good at predicting financial matters, they would be working in the industry. In finance, talent always goes towards the money. And the money in journalism is about one one-thousandth of the money in finance.

A "business" journalist is generally an excellent technical and grammatical writer with little to no understanding of their subject matter.

That's mine as well, with this addition:

I will continue to be either unemployed or underemployed

5 years from now, the least educated quintile of the American population will still be unemployed or underemployed. It will be a necessity that they be supported in some measure by some form of social welfare. Taxes, they be goin' up.

What happened before in previous decades when the least educated quintile was not supported by the gov't? Why don't we try that instead?

Most of them are on the spectrum of saying "It's going to be a bit before things are ok". The seperation comes if they think we'll be better around 2015 or they're on the batshiat crazy (but accomplished) end like this chick Link (new window).

I'd rather not have them and their children starving in the streets, thank you. We're better than that.

cant we fight a nice casualty heavy landwar with a large power, like russia or china, and then use up some of those poor? i mean traditionally thats what societies have done in ages past.

either that or we need to start a prison colony somewhere and send them there.

1. Industrial Revolution
2. Westward expansion
3. Starvation, disease, violence, and other forms of early death

And your brilliant economic plan is?

2011-12-15 10:11:51 AM
So wait....without all of these gov't programs we have massive land wars and people dying by the millions in the streets.

There's no fear mongering like liberal fear mongering.

Unlike pre-1980's America, there is a rapidily dwindling number of jobs for the less educated/those lower on the cognitive spectrum. What jobs left after the collapse of the building boom have been eradicated by overseas outsourcing and technology or been taken over by (often illegal) immigrants. Sure, I think it's better if Mr Lazy White guy high school dropout would deign to pick lettuce. But he's not gonna. He's better off going on pain meds for his back, and Zoloft for his depression, and get SSDI for being mental because there are no more decent jobs left for those who clock in at about 95 IQ or below. Going to college won't help him, he's not bright enough.

So either the government is going to have to implement expensive make work programs (picking up trash, etc.) or send people a pittance of a check and food stamps to keep them from running amok. The UK tried the latter, it doesn't work. They still run amok and fill the jails. Unemployed young men are a problem the world over. If they can't be used for cheap labor or cannon fodder, what is to be done with them?

No politician has the answer for this.

No, there's no truth like liberal truth. If you eliminate the social safety net, the poor and destitute that rely on that safety net for all or part of their survival will not be able to make ends meet. What do you expect them to do? They can't find a job. There aren't many unskilled jobs out there anymore, and the ones that exist can barely support one adult, let alone an adult and one or more children. They can't afford to further their education and learn work skills. What else would they do? There are two choices: starve and die in the streets (since public housing and Section 8 wouldn't exist anymore), or turn to crime to ensure that their basic needs, and those of their children, are met.

/don't give me that crap about private charity, either
//I've been in poverty
///I've been on food stamps and welfare
////did anyone help me out?
//no!
//Private charities don't do shiat unless you're at rock bottom.
