My wife watches that show so that means I hear it while I'm playing xbox.

Sad that the little kid has to go through all that crap. And sad for that Leah chick who seemed to be the best adjusted and had her head on straighter than the other girls.

But you don't watch, right *wink*

I am addicted to that show and I am not ashamed to admit it. When my daughter then later my son turn thirteen they will watch every damn episode. The only people who think these shows glorify teen pregnancy are the ones who have never seen it.

Reading the article it appears that there are 3 different women/sets of kids here right?

1 that is divorced with the twins (one of which has vision/neural problems)

1 that lives in a car/does drugs (but doesn't like alcohol)

1 that is a college student/actually works and is going to be renting a house (ie someone who is actually normal and not a drain on society)

The way that the article was written was waay confusing for someone who doesn't watch MTV/reality shows.

Yeah, the MRI is a pretty standard thing if the kid is behind, but doesn't show any signs of autism. Good on the kid's mom for going through with it - it's some pretty scary shiat, bringing your kid, still a baby really, to a hospital, having the kid put under because there's no chance she'll stay still in the MRI machine, and then waiting for the results.

Good god, the waiting.

I am not sure. They must put that money in some kind of trust for the kid or something because they want to document the struggling and were these girls actually getting 60k a year they would not be struggling as much as they are.

It probably goes something like this:

Ok, today we are going to film you "apply" for public housing. Then its back to your car where you "live". Reality TV is far from reality.

If three dumb twunts getting 60k a year is even on your "makes me sick" radar then don't do any reading about the financial sector or hold a white collar job for that matter. It will kill you.

Having a daughter with delays myself, I agree it sucks. My daughter is 3 but no one can give us a definitive diagnosis yet. She has severe motor and speech delays and has always been on the small side, and was born with cleft lip and palate. They did an MRI and EEG when she was about 14 months because they thought she might be having absence seizures, but turned up nothing. The worst part was that the nurse couldn't get the IV in her to knock her out - it took them 5-6 tries, with at least one attempt in each wrist and ankle.
More recently due to her smaller size, a doctor ordered a bunch of tests to check for pituitary tumors, but that was negative. All we have is a genetics test showing an abnormality (multiplication) on the 1st chromosome, but it wasn't identified as any known condition.
Because her head circumference is small, and she generally doesn't do the stupid little tests they try to give her (like putting pegs into a peg board) she's been labeled as intellectually disabled, and she probably is to some degree, but her grandmother (primary day care provider and has an education background) thinks she may have an autism spectrum disorder as well.

I find its easiest to deal with it by just taking things as they come and enjoying every bit of progress. Whenever a new possibility of a problem comes up (like when the doctor thought she could have a tumor) I've found that worrying and getting stressed out about it does no good, especially if it ends up being a false alarm. Be concerned, sure, but freaking out helps no one, especially the child.

Wow, it's actually good to hear that MRI is so standard now I think.

I'm an adult who has had lots of MRI for other physical problems, and while needing it might be scary, it's pretty darn cool that now they really can just say "hey, well, to debug this we just need to actually LOOK INSIDE and they can do it. One of those things that's great about being in the 21st century.

Good luck to that baby and family.

I never watched the second one, but I watched the first one. None of those chicks were struggling, that was my biggest problem with the whole premise - it *didn't* accurately portray the struggle of being super-young parents. None of them had jobs and they all lived pretty comfortable lives. That one moved to Tennessee or something to go to school and just up and rented a nice townhouse with no job and no nothing, it was absurd. Maybe they changed something for "Teen Mom 2," but they had access to that money in the first incarnation.

I also didn't like the fact that the two kids who actually made the right decision and gave the kid up for adoption *clearly* had the worst life. It's not like they could have controlled that (MTV), but it was just a shame.

Well, the fat couple in the first one struggled the most but you are right for the most part their parents paid for their lives (although the couple that gave theirs up for adoption lived effectively in trailer parks. The second one shows a bit more struggling aside from the one princess who's dad pays for everything for her.

Right, but you are looking at them through the lens of an adult, male, parent.

I don't think that a 12 year old girl would draw the same conclusions as you.

I dunno about that. Kailyn's (that's her name right?) mom was NEVER there for her, even when she was pregnant. She always picked her boyfriend(s) abover her daughter and as soon as Kailyn was knocked up, she pretty much wiped her hands clean of her. That's why she moved in with her boyfriend to begin with. Her mom is an AWFUL mother (a teen mother herself who is "reliving" her youth)

Kailyn has 2 jobs, is going to school, and although she's got an attitude, she isn't a bad kid. Her mother nor her mother's boyfriend want her in the house; I don't blame her for getting help through a charity. She's not on welfare (at least not yet) and doesn't seem to be the type at all to become a welfare mother. jst3p: Timmy the Tumor: if she's getting $60k a year for being on the show, how is she applying for public assistance?

As far as I know, they get $60k/year they are on the show. BUT almost none of the money is given to them until their contract ends. So they aren't getting paid much right now. Gary and the chick who gave birth to Leah from Teen Mom 1 have been taking out loans based upon their future payments, and from what I've heard have already spent most of it.

Amber and Catelynn are honest to god trailer trash (with all due respect). Maci is probably middle class and Farrah is probably upper middle class. I thought it was a great range of people.

Lollipop165: ailyn has 2 jobs, is going to school, and although she's got an attitude, she isn't a bad kid.

I mostly agree. She has a pretty good chance at using this experience to see that when you are financially dependent on others you have to put up with a lot of shiat sometimes. Hopefully the takeaway for her and kids watching the show is that you need to bring home the bacon if you want to call the shots. I think that she looks "better" because she is juxtaposed with the even bigger douchebag and entitled punk that is her babydaddy.

The couPle that was the most loving and mature (but also with the worst home life) decided there was no way they could provide well for their child and gave it up for adoption. The remaining immature trash were all "I love my babby" and are in the process of ruining the kid lives. I hate those people. They all claim thu want their kids to do more and that they'll be loving and present, but it's all talk. It's similar to this documentary I saw on private schools on Brooklyn (?), where all these parents were trying to win a lottery for private school admission. There were a few who claimed schooling was important and all this crap, but when you saw them interacting with the kid or helping them with school stuff, it was so much fail.

That's the thing though. Amber is trailer trash. But she lived in a decent apartment. It just looked like shiat because she was a farking slob. My point is that the money to pay for this shiat has to come from somewhere. Amber had no job. Maci had no job. Farrah had a "modeling career." of some sort. There was money coming from somewhere. Maybe they didn't get shiat in the first season, but they got it between the first and second.
