I concur. He should just pretend he's still a believer and enjoy his bacon in secret.

MarshHawk: I saw Matisyahu perform at the Sasquatch festival a few years ago. He put on a hell of a show.

Agreed. I saw him touring a few years back in support of Youth, and it was a crazy energetic. Funny thing, I hadn't thought about Matisyahu in a while and then just last week he showed up on a trivia quiz round (name the artists singing these Hannukah songs).

He might still be religious but just not Chassidic... plenty of speculation anyway.

what he said

still goes to mikveh everyday (which makes him pretty religious) goes to synagogue three times a day, seems like he just dropped Chassidus for a more mainstream Orthodoxy

Well, whatever he considers himself nowadays, I really haven't been overly impressed with anything he's done since Youth...fun to see live, though, no doubt.

Can you even sing Reggae if you're not Rastafarian?

Now if only he'd drop reggae for a musical genre that doesn't suck.

He wrote on twitter: "For all those who are confused:today I went to the Mikva and Shul just like yesterday."
he also wrote: "No more Chassidic reggae superstar ... At a certain point I felt the need to submit to a higher level of religiosity ... to move away from my intuition and to accept an ultimate truth."
His spokesperson said that he is still Orthodox just not with any particular sub group and that his client wanted people to know that most Orthodox Jews don't have beards

Guy singing reggae: Not cool.

Seriously? Someone's religious / cultural bias has an impact on your appreciation of their work?

"This music is hackneyed and played out."

"But look, he's Hasidic! How counterculture is that!"

"Oh, right! How cool! Can I borrow that CD?"

Also see: Bonnie Raitt. If she had been a dude, she never would have made it out of the bar scene. Derek Truck could have blown her off the stage when he was 12. I know this because I saw 12 year old Derek Truck at a bar in Orlando circa 1992. Nothing against female guitarists, because there are plenty that are pretty f'ing good.

But anyway, this is good news, because that whole "Hasidic" gimmick was really holding Matisyahu back from finding his true path to reggae-rap stardom as a regular old Jew from White Plains.

That gimmick was the entire reason he got any attention at all.

Chasidut (sorry, I speak Israeli) is not so far out of mainstream Orthodoxy. There are subtle differences, as I'm sure you know, but there are plenty of "Chassidim" in my parents' shul (a Young Israel), and plenty of not-so-Orthodox folks who like the energy of Chassidic shuls.

That said, the Gers in Sanhedria can party like a mofo. Also the first time I met Jews my size.

// does he still do mayim achronim?

1. Ger Chassidim are known for being HUGE. Like 6'5+, 300# guys. I'm not that big, but almost. To see even 3 other Jews like that in a room is uncommon, a whole community even more so (kal v'chomer, you might say).

2. Ever heard of the Jewish Man's Burden? Hint: they have to cut a bit off to give us parity with the rest of the world. I still hear from equal-opportunity friends of mine that we are truly god's blessed people (and, in one case, combined with a hilarious retelling of how she was "duped" by a former UMD tailback. Apparently, Bruce Perry is hung like your pinky. Toe).

if a tower in New York is suddenly inhabited by a malevolent deity that resembles a supermodel, I'm going to put you on the list of suspects partly responsible.

Dr Dreidel: Ever heard of the Jewish Man's Burden?

Of course, but we ain't talking about Jewish Women!

Ba-da-PISH!

I'm kidding, my mother and I get along great. In fact, the first time she met my wife, my wife was standing with a group of women, and I said, "mother, can you guess the woman i am going to marry." Right away she picked out my wife in the crowd! I said, "mom, how did you know," and she said "I don't like her."

I'm kidding! I hear we have lots of Jewish women here tonight, I know because the waiters have been asking "Is ANYTHING right?"

Thank you! Try the Veal.

I am happy he has kept his faith. My question is this, is he still so Orthodox that I can't shake his hand after a show? I so want to see him live and meet him, but don't want to infringe.

Seems like too hard a partying crowd for someone that's hardcore orthodox anything.

HAHAHAHA I knew he was a fake!
I laughed for the 2 years everyone fell for this show.
All it takes is a good marketing campaign.
Looks like it's MY turn to sell something......
I'll invent something so damn stupid and advertise it on TV.
