Hey, I've been in the market for a vehicle with more torques and quieter exhausts for a while now.

Interesting list.. some cars on it look quite cool, although some others appear totally impractical. Wouldn't want to be in an accident in that BB1, although it does seem rather tech-y.

Also.. did anyone else notice some odd/dumb wording in the section about the Surf?

"Fisker says the Surf's drivetrain now puts out over 981 torques" Is just me, or shouldn't that read "981 lb-ft of torque"

I hate it when people get their interwebs wrong.

Pics to project starts about halfway down the page (new window)

Always (and still do) wanted to do that to mine once the original 4-banger engine finally gave out. But the damn thing just wont die so I can't bring myself to rip it apart yet.

You don't watch Top Gear, do you?

Brits say "This car puts out x torques" as opposed to "has/generates x lb/ft"; just another Britishism that I'm sure they'd defend to the death as "makes more sense". I get the "aluminum/aluminium" gripe, but you don't say "horsepowers" or "pound per square inches"- force/power measurements aren't pluralized.

Also, re: TFA; that NISMO Leaf kicks ass. If the consumer version were bodied that way I'd buy one in a heartbeat; even if it were an aluminum/composite body instead of $100,000 worth of molded carbon fiber.

Somebody on Fark said that, once they start racing them, the electric cars will make huge progress. Looks like we are at the beginning of that process.

Makes about as much sense as saying "It goes up to 145 speeds", or "It can do the quarter-length in 10.3 times".

Cool. I always felt that a big part of the reason electric driving hasn't gained popularity is because of aesthetics. For some reason, eco-friendly cars have the most unappealing, unattractive designs, an approach I've never understood - even tree-hugging hippies like myself can appreciate the beauty and prowess of a sexy ride, and the genius and elegance of an efficient engine. If I can have that and minimize my environmental impact, I can be a happy boy.

Also, while the sheer power off a battery engine is impressive, there is an irreplaceable character in an internal combustion engine. Electric cars risk losing this personality quirk, which I think is another reason our adaptation to them has been slow.

Meh, the coolest electric vehicle isn't even on Earth.

A bigger reason is that while they may have enough range for the average commute, they don't have enough range for the exceptional trips, which means you have to come up with inconvenient alternatives.

Yeah, nothing can make insecure men feel powerful like a machine that makes a lot of noise. Eventually EV manufacturers will have to produce versions with noisemakers if they want to get a piece of the Tard market.

I was thinking the same thing. A race car that sounds like a power drill just doesn't compare against the roar of a gas or diesel powered engine in regards to drawing emotion from the driver or spectator. Watching the in car footage of the leaf just felt weird.

True that. What's the range on battery charging stations these days?

Not very far, as battery charging stations tend to be bolted into the concrete.

Heh.

When you can recharge an electric vehicle in 5 minutes to at least 100+ mile range at highway speeds, then there will be much less reluctance to buy one.

/Two hundred miles would be better.

Funny that these posts landed right on top of each other.

Hollie, electric cars make noise, too. A rather droning, high-pitched whine. Kind of like your post (JK, couldn't help myself). And there's a lot more going on in the psychology behind the roar of a beast than its inverse relationship with its penis size.

Tentacle: No electric aircraft?

Actually, yes, there are a number of them in current production, but they are mostly motor-gliders.

DeLorean fans rejoice! The DeLorean Motor Company of Texas has partnered with Epic EV to produce an all-electric DeLorean "rated for 260 horsepower with a maximum speed of 125MPH." It features "a mysterious box labeled 'Flux' on it and aside from the iPhone dock, 125 mile per hour speed and 260 horsepower, built-in GPS navigation system, DMC is remaining mum on the vehicle's specs."

1.21 gigawatts!

The company I work for is working on slapping some solar panels on the Elektra One (new window) in order to improve its range. It's pretty sweet.

Why not pick something that you can actually buy ... NOW (new window)?

The model S can go 0-60 in 4.5 seconds.

Oh yes, I want one.

The Model S is very nice, I agree, but I think Señor Montoya would have an issue with your usage of "NOW."
