I remember hearing on NPR how farked the Chinese education system is. I feel so bad for kids who want to get into decent schools in China. It's bad everywhere but it's proper farked there.

As someone who attends a graduate school in America, I have only this to say:

I'm still trying to find my self-discipline, and I'm getting dangerously close to my 30's. My parents weren't lazy, and they weren't snowflakey either. I never had to try all that hard to get the best grades in school and as long as I was getting good grades and staying out of trouble my parents were satisfied.

Pavlovian methods can work - For instance, if homework isn't done no WII on the weekends. If grades fall below a certain point no sports. That is just as Pavlovian. There is nothing wrong with pairing good behavior with rewards - and delayed reward teaches longer term thinking.

Beating a kid will eventually either produce a ruined depressive or a sociopath.

No, the dad isn't personally responsible for all the youth suicides in China. But his actions do symbolize the type of parenting culture in the country that leads to these suicides. And the fact that he's writing a book that openly encourages and promotes this type of behavior certainly makes him guilty of perpetuating the meme.

All animals in nature physically discipline their young. We are animals. beating (within reason, a slap to the face is good, punch to the mouth not good) is an instant punishment and is fear inducing enough to quell bad behavior. Couple this with reward for good and you have good children who grow in to good adults.

We are way, way to soft on kids now and they all suck. None of the problems we have now were running rampant in the 50's when even your neighbor could smack your kid if they were an idiot. Slaps and spankings are good tools and should be used in conjunction with reward.
