Now security guards have the technology to blow up two pixels worth of data into a crystal clear hi-def image?

Damn.

And when I was at Willowbrook in Wayne NJ and my g/f's wallet was lifted and we called the card company from the police holiday headquarters at the mall and the card company said it was being used right then and there at a store at that mall but the police did nothing about it.

Nicely done.

Why did it take him two weeks to get it to her, exactly? Did these phone calls he made last two weeks?

I'm not sure what you wanted the mall cops to do here. Did you know what your thief looked like? If not, then it's not like the guy was walking by the Spencer Gifts, proudly waving your credit card over his head.

Great story & all, but I'm a little shocked that after losing $300 in cash, returning to the store, and asking staff for help finding it, nobody thought to maybe take down her name and number in case it turned up?

Well done Mr. Anderson, but jeez.

Why didn't they get her information when she first came in search of the envelope in case it turned up. Isn't that the proper thing to do when someone reports something lost?

Considering the...pay scale for the average mall security guard, was a very decent thing to do.

Would like to say I'd do the same, but you never know till you're in that situation yourself.

It's funny...as a skeptic, I've never intellectually believed in the concept of Karma, but it does seem there's a way of things working out for the better when you've done good for others. At least, I hope so, and certainly for this guy. Good on him.

Slightly off-subject, but I find it curious that "information" has come to mean, at least in the US, a person's name, address, phone number, etc.
Also, I was about 8 years old when the Bionic Man came out, and Lee Majors was my first crush. Ah, life.

Mall cops will do damn near anything for a girl, and trip over themselves to help the cute ones. Men don't exactly have the same experience, especially young men. The only exception seems to be that girls with beanies get lumped right into the shoplifter category even if they're the most practical way of keeping warm.

Dude, the first is a technology to take 3D photos, pseudo-holograms, not high-resolution cameras. High res cameras have existed forever, but one constant is that businesses are all too cheap to pay for good tech. The vast majority of surveillance is sub-VHS quality.

As for the second, there's a mathematical limit to the amount of information you can retrieve from any image or video source. We hit that point almost ten years ago, the technology is just filtering down into consumer levels, and I was using it on a professional level over 5 years ago. You can certainly get a lot more than you think from a low-quality source, but CSI will always be fantasy. Once you erase information some of it is always gone forever, whether you never capture it, compress it away, or pre-filter it to take less space. Adobe's filters are designed to be used with uncompressed RAW files that have tons of extraneous information that can still be pulled out. Beyond a certain point you only get noise and fake data, which gets more obvious the further you blow it up.

I'd like to believe in the concept of Karma but if it's true then I must have been very EVIL in a past life. Not as bad my new neighbor though. His wife just left him. He moved in to the apartments belonging to his boss, in a town where he doesn't know anyone, and joked about how the only thing he has left is his 360. Within 24 hours of moving in he gets his door kicked in. They stole his 360, big screen tv, and all the xmas presents for his son. He was rather distraught when he came home from work last night. :(
