Leave it to a woman named Janet to say something to make girls feel better without empirical data other than written studies. If Janet wants to be a scientist than does real research she might want to speak to men at John Hopkins that have used PET and MRI scans to show that male and female brains do process math differently. There are other studies at other universities. Janet might even learn an adult male brain on average is 11-12% larger than a female brain. The reason maybe because language and math are performed by different parts of the male and female brain. I am sure if Janet just had a make over and did a little shopping she would forget all about men on average are better than girls at math.

No disrespect to Madam Currie and the few other women that have overcome their handicap to excel.

The two Authors of the study Janet E. Mertz and Jonathan M. Kane Of course there was a man involved there was math involved. Any bets if Mr. Kane is dating or trying to date Janet? Kane being located at a small school best know for producing PE teachers on pare with Stout; Kane is happy when any woman asks him anything and going along with a nonsensical study I am sure is not even in his top ten stupid things he has done for a woman.

At least in the U.S., studies have shown that boys and girls tend to perform equally well in math and science until puberty hits, then the disparity starts. I guess you could make the argument that there's a biological variable there, but I remember most scientists arguing that it was largely cultural and societal variables that play an important role.

Women don't need to use math because they sleep with one guy at a time. We men need numbers and shiat to keep track of our biatches.

2011-12-13 06:47:10 PM
I read an interesting study on Slashdot earlier in the thread covering the same topic. It was something to the effect of "Everyone thinks math is important in 3rd grade. As you get older, everyone starts thinking it's less important until 8th grade, where it's mostly few boys who think it's still important."

Does puberty put a damper on our desire to learn math fundamentals?
It would explain the male/female differences (women hit puberty first so men get further along before the loins start telling them it's time to multiply).

No, puberty puts encouragement on us to fall into socially-defined roles.

As the study shows, the gender difference varies by country and social environment. The Y chromosome does not. Therefore, the difference is not biological.

Also, if this were true, there would be no male mathematicians either. They would merely fall out of mathematics at a slightly later age.

Neil DeGrasse Tyson had a good point about attitudes towards math proficiency. You wouldn't go around talking about how illiterate you are (unless you're on Fark and named eurotrader), because you would be rightly ridiculed as a dumbass. However, it's completely acceptable to tell people "oh, I suck at math".

I, of course, wisely conceal my mathematical shortcomings with these prescription-less glasses and a plastic glow-in-the-dark Fields Medal that I found in my box of Count Chocula.
