hmm....

*wanders over to website*

Hi. We have no records on you.

hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

nothing to worry about folks.

2011-12-13 02:04:07 PM
Unless you're a business, or otherwise have a reason to have a static IP address, I'm not sure how this site would peg you as the one that downloaded it rather than the series of people who have had that particular IP address over the days/weeks/months/years.

I understand that more and more people have "always on" network connections, but even still, I reboot my router now and then and grab a new dynamic address.

2011-12-13 02:07:02 PM
Oh BOY do the commenters have no idea how this works.

1) Poll public trackers for their user list. It apparently does this by trawling through piratebay, etc, and pinging individual torrents. It then records the user list the tracker sends them, and (presumably) disconnects.
2) It adds the name of the torrent to all the IPs it got back.
3) After a while, it has a very large list of IPs and the torrents they're downloading.
4) When you visit the site, it passes you the record for the IP you're using.

Now, since trackers typically don't provide HISTORICAL information to remote users, you have to actually be connected to that tracker at the same time as this service's spider to be recorded.

It can't record data from private trackers- because without a valid login, the tracker won't tell the spider anything.

By the way, this is the same way content owners determine who to send C&Ds to.

I've seen this elsewhere, and as people have pointed out the option to remove yourself looks crazy suspicious. For one, to request it you have to agree that the data is accurate and you have to log in with your Facebook account.

I didn't bother trying to remove myself for several reasons, including that it's only showing three things for me. Two animes that I didn't download, but I guess my roommate may have, and a porn movie I got off a public tracker cause I couldn't find it on the private tracker I normally use. I'm guessing they don't keep records on private trackers?

PeerGuardian2 seems to work pretty well against this thing, which is nice. It's also weird to see every title downloaded around me is porn, though. You'd think there would be at least one cam copy of The Babysitter or something...

2011-12-13 02:24:32 PM
As someone who uses DSL I am not worried that much.

Dynamic IP addresses ftw

/And yes, it shows me downloading one episode of Boss

2011-12-13 02:26:13 PM
Oh, any bets on how much longer this will be up before anonymous takes it down?

2011-12-13 02:28:10 PM
cman: it shows me downloading one episode of Boss

Cake? Or Who's The?

...Oh, there's a show called that by itself? With neither Cake Boss Cake Boss nor Tony Danza?

Oh god, imagine Tony Danza AS CAKE BOSS. Cake Boss

2011-12-13 02:39:41 PM
The website clear does state "Don't take it seriously".

If I had to guess, you've been listening to too many Paul F Thompkins podcasts

I'm seriously like 20 hours behind on Pod F. Tompkast and Doug Loves Movies. Caught up on CBB though.

2011-12-13 02:48:50 PM
I guess I shouldn't take it too seriously because I was DLing part 2 of "Bag of Bones" when I checked the site & it says it has no records on me.

Bathia_Mapes: I guess I shouldn't take it too seriously because I was DLing part 2 of "Bag of Bones" when I checked the site & it says it has no records on me.

That means it hadn't checked the torrent you were using. It doesn't check your IP when you log in- it's checking TORRENTS and recording who's using them. But obviously it can only check so many, so frequently.

2011-12-13 02:54:27 PM
Of course I haven't, since there is a mechanism by which I can pay for music I want to download to my computer.

Movies..well, if there was a legal way I could stream that, I would pay for that too. But since there isn't, it's not my fault I have to obtain their works by alternative means.

As such, it stops short of parsing through "dynamic" IP addresses

That is most of the internets.

2011-12-13 03:00:54 PM
Hmm, you have to wonder if the whole thing just isn't an exercise to record the IPs of people who visit, as they are more likely to be downloaders.

Because People in power are Stupid: dynamic

Yeah, doesn't that make this website lean toward the useless side of things? Who even has a static IP address anymore?

A MUD I used to play had a "where" project where you could mail your location to the admins and they would tag it by IP. The project became completely irrelevant when most users were switched over to dynamic IPs. Issuing the "where" command would show you a bunch of "anonymous" users who frequently changes IPs, maybe one or two people whose location was correct, and a handful whose location was actually incorrect due to IP recycling.

Neat, it shows two entries for me. Both are files I have actually downloaded but one of them is an episode of Pioneer One, a show distributed via bittorrent with seeding encouraged to help spread the show.

Newsflash: not everything distributed via the bittorrent protocol is pirated.

It's just a spider, it doesn't differentiate between pirated and non-pirated. The site is supposed to "scare" you by showing you you can be tracked.

Heh, I tried the same thing (iPhone) and it told me it couldn't figure out where I was, but I apparently downloaded Z-Ro-Meth-2011-CR.

After a quick search I apparently downloaded a new CD from some Houston rapper named Z-Ro who put out an album this year titled Meth. It follows other wonderful albums such as Heroin (2010), Cocaine (2009), and 2008's smash hit Crack.

I had a look at the site while I was downloading this week's Dexter episode. "We have no records on you." LOL, fail.

maybe we need to change the copyright/piracy laws to force the owner of the copyright to get the websites taken down?
if the illegal material wasnt on the website, there would be no way for people to steal it, right ??

This is the time where you draw up a fake RIAA Threat letter and hand it to her. She'll freak the hell out when you show her the website and her single download of GCH which will cost y'all the entire wedding. Then while she's crying say "You wouldn't download a marriage certificate would you?!"

/At least I would do it

Send her a fake ticket, pocket the fine, buy scotch. Laugh at her poor choice in music while drinking said scotch.

I just checked on this work machine that I'm using now. It says someone downloaded Mystery Men from this IP address. Firstly, our work servers have a wicked DNS blocker that makes it impossible to access any file sharing or torrent sites. And secondly, Mystery Men? Who the hell is downloading that?

That was my first thought as well. "A bunch of computers here at work are slowing down our network for some kind of WoW raid. Who could be behind such a thing? I have literally no suspects in mind..."

"Hi. We have no records on you.

This means you are using a private torrent tracker or, of course, you may not be a torrent user at all! It happens. Please, entertain yourself. Feel free to see what other people have downloaded. The search box is on the top. If you have any friends who use torrents, use it to scare them off. We also have a widget that you can install in your website, blog or Facebook page. Or you can just send them a link to this site. They will see a table similar to what you see below. The only difference - they will see their downloads.
Well, you are in the clear. But look what others do"

I'm safe...
