Why is this being posted everywhere on the net with the disclaimer that subby doesn't own it?

The original seems to be working fine.

Stephen Colbert Interview - Montclair Kimberley Academy
January 29, 2010 in the Watch section

A discussion about science, society, and the universe with Stephen Colbert, who is out of character, at the Kimberley Academy in Montclair, New Jersey.

This is currently on my "to watch" list, but I just haven't had time yet. Colbert is awesome, and I have a bit of a man-crush on Neil deGrasse Tyson.

The Hayden Planetarium called. Its website is fine.

The video is... less than dynamic. Just the two of them sitting in chairs talking. If you can manage just the audio, go for it.

Fark pulls the original video description through into its Youtube container pages. This video re-blew up late November for some reason, and on the 27th, when this was uploaded, I'm willing to bet that the original host site was farked.

Now, this just happens to be the link people have been passing around. Because for a few days, it was the only one that worked.

By the way, the Hayden Planetarium has to pay for their own bandwidth, and they don't get any Adsense money. They lose nothing when you watch this on Youtube.

Yeah me too.

Dr. Tyson is awesome, but he's a bit subdued.

if I had to take an astrophysics class I think I'd prefer Alex Filippenko. He's a bit more gregarious, and I'd imagine that sitting thru one of his lectures while hungover or still slightly drunk would be less of an ordeal.

He reminds me of an academic Jim J. Bullock.

I think she can afford it, with all that Heroes money.

Because many video players suck (like the one on the original). Many can't be played easily on a smartphone. Youtube's native app is perfect all around.

I hate it when people don't use YouTube.

Also, YouTube allows you to save it to your playlist. I don't have the time to watch and hour and a half video now, and I'd probably forget when work is done.

This was a good watch/listen (a podcast would have sufficed). It did make me aware of the potential strike from the asteroid Apophis which I'm not sure if I had heard of before

Remember to listen to Tyson's podcast called "Star Talk". It's pretty cool.

Well, if you haven't listened to the Nerdist Podcast you really should. Heck you could start with the one with Neil deGrasse Tyson as the guest. (#139)

Well that was awesome.

And this video is where it was pulled from (new window). He's explaining why Isaac Newton is his favorite physicist. It's actually pretty cool if you have two minutes to spare.

The first 6 minutes is the normal blathering from people you've never heard of thanking other people you've never heard of. You can skip it.

/the rest is awesome
//or at least the next 20 minutes of it

Subdued? You need to check his last appearance on Real Time with Bill Maher.

Kinda wish Tyson would stop interrupting the guests so much.

Also, the Star Talk intro is completely over-the-top.

Still, a nice show.

I didn't think Colbert was the best interviewer there.

2011-12-13 07:09:32 PM
I could ask for it to be someone that I've heard of?

As someone who had the good fortune to sit through several Alex Filippenko lectures in good ol Pimentel, I can assure you that yes, he is awesome in every possible way.

I was fairly upset recently when he wasn't part of the Nobel prize winning team for all of the "runaway universe" work that was given to others. He played a huge role in that, and definitely should have been among those honored.

2011-12-13 07:29:08 PM
That was just like the posting of Queen's Live Aid performance that was streamed on YouTube for Freddie's birthday:
I planned to just watch a few minutes, I'm a big fan of NdGT, but wound up watching the whole damn thing!

2011-12-13 07:41:08 PM
Listened to it in the background while doing other things when I stumbled across it a week or so ago. It's so, so great. Glad it turned up here. Definitely a must listen.

Neil deGrasse Tyson doing the Victory Dance of Science is not to be missed

2011-12-13 07:50:38 PM
For those who didn't watch to the end, you missed an awesome payoff.

"Words that make questions may not be questions at all." - NdGT

Stephen's response was pure joy to watch.

2011-12-13 08:23:26 PM
great interview, if you enjoy science or Neil deGrasse Tyson this is a must watch

2011-12-13 09:32:21 PM
PartTimeBuddha: I didn't think Colbert was the best interviewer there.

I've tried to get into him but I don't see his appeal. Yes, I get the satirist angle, but here he comes off like a doofy fanboy interviewer who is somehow trying to outdo his speaker guest by being witty.

2011-12-13 09:50:44 PM
I started to just a little, and then I accidentally the whole thing.

2011-12-13 10:53:21 PM
Alex Filippenko.

Alex Filippenko.

I said Alex Filippenko.
