I know the original saying is "passing in the night" (I think), but what does it mean?

Maybe they saw the dike and decided to try docking?

headline should have added, "w/ pic of what one ship, not colliding with anything, might look like"

Whiskey Dickens: I know the original saying is "passing in the night" (I think), but what does it mean?

The original is "Like two ships, passing in the night', and it means that you see each other, but can never "be together" - or you know, like two ships colliding in the night, there's someone taking on water, all hands on deck, and lots of seamen in life vests.

Was one of them a lighthouse?

Thanks for the explanation! I'm not sure why "at night" is important though, as ships also don't come together during the day either...

They must have been playing the Texas Chicken, and didn't give the hard a' starboard order until it was too late.

How are we gonna explain this one to the insurance company?

Didja ever wonder why people do that dance on the sidewalk when one person can't keep to the right? It's like that...

Maybe the other vessel was a tanker but the HARVEST SUN (pictured) is not.

This is the normal, routine biweekly Houston Ship Channel Collision - this is like trying not to hit someone crossing the Grand Central waiting room at 5:30, sooner or later...

And no amount of electronic gizmo will stop it.

I couldn understand that article, or the picture. Hovering over the picture reveals the helpful phototag: 'fog'.

Captain of ship #1: "Hey! You made me spill that mickey all over myself! When are you gonna learn to signal!" *shakes fist out window*

Captain of ship #2: "ZZZzzzzzz!" *snort* What?"

At least they didn't run aground or ram a oil platform. . .
