Melinda Ganziano of McCullom Lake, Ill., wanted to introduce her son to the basics of banking, but he ended up with $229 in fees in two weeks with a balance of just $4.85.

yup, sounds about right.

Can't give your kid a better lesson than that. Bankers are crooks with business cards.

Been there. And to put the cherry on top, they report you to ChexSystems (new window) so you can't actually open another checking account anywhere else.

Hey Weav, are you in on the SWTOR early release? I activated this AM and was late to work playing. EIP if you've already picked a server, etc.

Should tell the bank: "How about you come take your two bills and change outta my ass".

Jake Havechek: Can't give your kid a better lesson than that. Bankers are crooks with business cards.

Amen to that.

Yes.
Thanks to my former bank, I once paid $25.54 for a package of Fig Newtons.
Then paid $345 worth of fees on $215 worth or purchases.
I fired Wachovia shortly thereafter.

/Credit union, oh yeah.
/Ska-rew the banks.

Credit union. This stuff should be minimal when you're owned by the people who deposit money into their shares of the union.

Either put your money in a credit union or go to something like Private Vaults here Link (new window) to keep your money in.

Banks are the enemy.

After he put money into the savings accont from his job, Daniel Ganziano's balance eventually fell to $4.85 and with such a small amount, he ignored it.

However, TCF sent him a letter on Oct. 12 informing him that it had charged him a $9.95 monthly maintenance fee six days earlier because the account had a low balance.

"We aren't making enough interest on your account, so we're just going to straight up take some of your money instead. You're welcome."

I hate this shiat from big banks. Local banks have their own problems, but they generally don't steal from their customers.

CSB

When I was in my teenage years my Dad gave me some savings bonds he had gotten when I was born in my name

Went to TCF Bank where I had my checking and savings to redeem them

Got money, got called a week later by the bank saying that they had accidentally given me too much money for them and needed the difference back

I wanted to tell them to stuff it, but my Dad told me to give it back

Still think we should have told them to stuff it

There were other occasions over the years (before I moved to Wells Fargo in college) that put me off them

This actually happened to me, I used to work at BofA Securities so I had free checking until I left. For some reason I left $100 in my BofA account. They slowly charged me $20 month and ended up having to pay $35 to close the account. otherwise it would go to collections. I have no idea why I didn't simply close the account, I blame it on the drinking.

Credit unions charge a fee for low balance as well, but (mine at least) won't charge the fee if it would make you fall to a negative balance...

In my state there are limits on fees up to age 18 or so, so you can learn your lessons cheaply. I think 18 year olds do get protection, i.e. it's under 19 rather than under 18. But it's been a while. When I was that age we had checks and passbooks instead of cards, and banks were local and not out to gouge their customers so badly.

i am sure you heard from me. a stale check from an old employer was not honored, thus i was hit with 4 separate ODs @ $39 a piece. it happened all so quickly that by the time i noticed it (within 48 hours), it was far too late. i even tried to remedy the situation by bringing the account back to $0, however another OD fee was hitting a 5th transaction and i would be hit with another $39 fine the next day.

hate hate HATE citizens bank. i wish everyone within that organization a slow, painful death.

I was shocked, SHOCKED when I read the article and realized it wasn't Bank of America, who has a class-action suit against them for this bullshiat.

Shortly after my birth in 1978, my parents started a savings account for me at Connecticut Bank and Trust in downtown Groton, Connecticut. As the years of my childhood passed and allowance, birthday money, etc., went into it, CBT was bought by Fleet Bank and very little changed--technology improved, newer products such as debit cards and such were offered. I continued to bank with Fleet through my college years--establishing my first checking account and getting my first debit card with them.

Eventually, Fleet was purchased by Bank of America. This was right about the time I started to live on my own and use my checking account frequently.

Overdraft fees and the like became very onerous and drove me nearly to madness. It was at this point that instead of taking my paycheck to Bank of America, I would instead start another checking account with Citizens Bank, which ironically is owned by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS). I have been very happy with their service.

Bank of America continued to pursue me for my delinquent checking account, but recently, I recieved a piece of mail announcing that a class-action suit against BoA for its overdraft practices had been filed.

For a bank to be so bad that it loses a 28-year customer, really says something.

Yeah, as soon as the kids show they are responsible enough, we're taking them to our credit union and opening them a kid's savings account.

Our credit union gives them a ticket for every $10 dollars deposited that they can use to get some rewards, but gives the kids an incentive to save both real cash and the tickets.

They've both had piggy banks since they were born, with us putting any money they received in there until they were about 4 (they are 7 and 5 now) and started to understand coins and dollars get them things. At that point, we started asking them to put in half of any money they get for birthdays and the like into there. They also get money for doing a series of chores and good things around the house. They are both starting to realize they need to save their money to get the better toys and craft stuff.

Fair enough. I skipped Skyrim because I knew I wouldn't be able to hold off on SWTOR, though I certainly enjoyed the many (many many) Fark Skyrim threads.

HotIgneous Intruder: Thanks to my former bank, I once paid $25.54 for a package of Fig Newtons.
Then paid $345 worth of fees on $215 worth or purchases.
I fired Wachovia shortly thereafter.

Wachovia is the bank that finally drove me to a credit union. They processed my debits before credits and overdrafts on top of that, which lead to the following scenario:

$350 in account
Payday
$2000 Paycheck pending
$400 Car Payment pending
Me: Whoops, let me go deposit $50 cash to cover my car payment.

Next Day
$400 Car Payment processed Balance: -$50
$50 Cash Deposit processed Balance: $0
$35 Overdraft (for the first overdraft) Balance: $-35
$35 Overdraft (for the second overdraft) Balance: $-70
$2000 Paycheck processed Balance: $1930

So fark Wachovia is what I'm saying.

/never again

Anyone bank with USAA? I've been thinking about switching to them (have WF now, fark WF) and have mostly heard good things, which is shocking when you're discussing anything in the banking industry.

I always thought you needed to be a vet (or family of one), but that's only for the insurance and special stuff on your account.

Same thing happened to my wife a few years back. She used her debit card to pump gas. The "hold" amount that the gas station put on the card was over the balance in the account, causing the bank to charge an overdraft fee (on imaginary money). The overdraft fee then caused an actual overdraw, so another fee was charged. In the end, there were seven fees from one transaction, adding up to around $350.

We complained and got a few of the fees waived, but still ended up paying way, way more than we should have. We canceled the account the following week.
