My first elementary school had two recesses per day, free time after lunch, and twice weekly music, art, and PE classes. I was also encouraged by my teachers to excel, and given advanced homework by them in order to help me pursue that and allowed to join the Talented and Gifted program. I thoroughly enjoyed school then and worked very hard at it. The lack of physical activity is one of the things that is destroying school life for boys in this country. We need to give children a chance to burn off their energy in constructive ways, otherwise they'll burn it off through acting out in class and just get into trouble. We also need to encourage children to take interest in fine arts, at least through middle school. If the school day or school year needs to be made a little longer (or go to year-round schooling like some elementary schools in my district are now trying), than so be it. We also need to stop putting so much "self-esteem" into children who have done nothing to deserve it. True self-esteem can only come from accomplishment and proficiency in one's work. Finally, we need to stop these attempts at child-centered learning and go back to the basics of rote memorization and phonics. Modern methods and silly styles are being tested wholesale and failures in them have doomed many children to illiteracy and innumeracy.

VIVA teachers also recommended allowing teachers to teach in two shifts, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so students can enjoy a longer school day without lengthening the school day for teachers.

You expect children as young as 5 to handle an 8 to 5 day, when you teachers are not willing to do so?

I assume/hope the teachers would be pulling a 9 hour day as well. They'd have 7 hours in the classroom and 2 hours for prep and grading as well. Everyone is doing 9 hours, but just stagger the arrival and departure of the teachers.

we had recess up through middle school. only they called it "walk and talk", wherein we were required to walk laps around the track after lunch, so we didn't turn into fat fycks.

I used to love recess. I would love the class time after recess when most all of my classmates were calm.

Positive rights are bullshiat.

You might argue that every person has the right to be free from people stopping stopping them from worshiping or enjoying recess though.

I think the world would be a much happier place if we did have the right to recess, along with the playgrounds to exercise that right. Much, much happier.

No, we can't have teachers working as hard as the people who their salaries, retirement and health care...Would you if you didn't have to?
Then people might starting taking their complaints of average pay seriously.

When I was a small fark we had THREE recesses a day right up until 5th grade. Kids need fresh air and running around. On bad days we took turns in the gym or played games in class. Much better then drugs for calming kids down.

We had after-school programs until 6 for kids who had parents that had to work so that they would be somewhere safe, and kids could be dropped off before 8:00 with a teacher or administrator there in the morning to keep an eye on them until classes started. Of course people worked 9-5 instead of 8-5... so that helps to fark teachers, parents, and kids today.

For fark's sake they need unstructured activity, art, and music. They need a safe place to stay, because their parents are too busy trying to keep jobs to pay for the house. How have we forgotten this?

You don't live in the Untied States, do you?

United States Constitution, Article 1, Section 2, Clause 1: "The House of Representatives shall be composed of Members chosen every second Year by the People of the several States"

The Seventeenth Amendment to the US Constitution: "The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years"

United States Constitution, Article 4, Section 1, Clause 1: "The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government"

Just a note of clarification for subby, and this only applies in the U.S., might be different elsewhere, but voting is not a right, fundamental or otherwise.

Note that in all of this, though, the Constitution never explicitly ensures the right to vote, as it does the right to speech, for example. It does require that Representatives be chosen and Senators be elected by "the People," and who comprises "the People" has been expanded by the aforementioned amendments several times. Aside from these requirements, though, the qualifications for voters are left to the states. And as long as the qualifications do not conflict with anything in the Constitution, that right can be withheld. For example, in Texas, persons declared mentally incompetent and felons currently in prison or on probation are denied the right to vote. It is interesting to note that though the 26th Amendment requires that 18-year-olds must be able to vote, states can allow persons younger than 18 to vote, if they chose to.

Because in the Real World almost no one uses those for Real Work

/gimp still lacks native CMYK support
//open office still isn't good enough to be 100% compatible with MS Office; yes that is a requirement
///dunno if anyone uses Blender 3d for commercial work on any scale, not my specialty, but i doubt it

You do not have a right to vote and it's beyond me why anyone thinks they do.
