So by her rationale, if I think someone is doing somehting that doesn't jibe with what *I* deem acceptable,..I should just do whatever I want to make it "better" to me.

Hmmm,..., if other people worship in a way I don't like, maybe I just barge in on them and force my beliefs on them.

I suspect the Pope will be calling her up for missionary work any day now.

Complain about the government all you want, but it's self important pieces of shiate like this that make the world a bad place.

"I was deeply offended," Czarnecki said. "It felt like a spiritual assault. The cross is a symbol that Christians and non-Christians recognize. Nobody has the right to put up such a thing."

So... a cross with a Santa costume on it is somehow morally wrong, but a cross with a battered and bloodied semi-naked Jesus on it is fine?

Is the HERO tag being used sarcastically here? I can't tell.

Cripes, lady, go find a cold river and jump in so you can hang out with JC himself over the holidays.

She seems like a real biatch.

She's a young grandmother.)

And her daughter is a slut.

FTFA: I asked whether the creator of the piece, Jeff Heflin Jr. of Middleburg, had a First Amendment right to freedom of speech in this instance. "I don't think that's correct," Czarnecki said. "Nobody can put whatever they want. If you deliberately attack a religion, it was threatening."

I assume by "a religion", she specifically means "christianity". Others are all fair game.

"I was deeply offended," Czarnecki said. "It felt like a spiritual assault. The cross is a symbol that Christians and non-Christians recognize. Nobody has the right to put up such a thing." There has not been any indication that she will be charged with anything, she said.

I want this woman to die violently in front of her grandchildren.

Good thing she didn't go to my photography exhibit, "Piss Santa".

Arrest her.

And she made an extra effort to drive over to the courthouse to see it. It wasn't like she just drove by accidentally. She was deliberately trying to be offended.

The problem is that this whole situation is like the zero tolerance idiocy we see in schools.

There is nothing inherently wrong with holiday displays in public squares, or even city cooperation with heritage groups. The nonsense begins when people push the boundary of honest efforts to celebrate your holidays and city officials are permitted no leeway to say no.

In short, assholes abusing the process on both sides are why we can't have nice things. I'm an atheist who loves Christmas displays. It's a fun celebration of the general culture of the town.

I really think the concept of allow it all or allow none tends to make a mess of what could be a fun holiday season.

That's a bit harsh. Maybe someone should just burn the Bill of Rights onto a block of wood and hit her with it until she gets the point.

OK, the lady desperately needs a smack upside the head at the very least, but what made you assume she's Catholic? (I'm assuming that from your "Pope" remark...).

/Hint: Catholics don't call it a "cross"

She's a young grandmother

She's not that young.

"She thought about the children who might see it, and be traumatized by a possibly crucified Santa. (She's a young grandmother.) She was offended as a Christian at the use of the cross. It did not seem funny, "

*that'sthejoke.jpg*

So this possibly unemployed woman apparently drives around all day looking for shiat to get offended by on behalf of children. Seriously that's what she does.

Wait

Someone is literally frightened of a plastic skeleton, dressed up like santa and drapped on a wooden cross?

Really?

We're that pathetic now?

Sounds like she isn't grown up enough for American cistizenship. Maybe she'd be more comfortable someplace else.

What? They've been being used sarcastically for YEARS. Way before Fark got really popular, long before I signed up.

Devil's advocate:

Would it be ok to put up a display showing Muhammad's face?

A flaming cross or Confederate flag?

A Star of David with dollar signs all over it?

A Westboro Baptist Church display?

If they got a permit, I should think so. I'm all for free speech and making whatever statements you want but if you attack people you should not be shocked when they fight back.

/Thinks all religious people need to relax a bit and take themselves less seriously.

She was also, fat.

TheWizard: I really think the concept of allow it all or allow none tends to make a mess of what could be a fun holiday season.

An authority should be put in place with the power to draw a bright line as to what is acceptable and what is not? We'd be stupid not to do that!

Wut??

Of course they do, assuming there is not a depiction of Jesus on it.

No Jesus = Cross
With Jesus = Crucifix

The housewives of Loudoun County, saving Christmas one day at a time.

2011-12-13 11:54:07 AM
FTA: It would seem the newly elected Board of Supervisors in Loudoun has only one path out of this mess next year: no displays of any kind on the grounds of the county courthouse. Why should a government get in the middle of this drama anyway? It's the place to handle the boring adult functions of the law, not a community clubhouse.

This.

I understand why she'd be upset but to be almost brought to tears, really, lighten up Francis.

2011-12-13 11:55:32 AM
This santa cross display doesn't make a lick of sense and screams Poe's Law.
Every article (except this one) makes it a point to say the woman who put up the display was an atheist with a christian son. Why?

Since when? In all the brainwashing sessions I was forced to go as a child the word cross was used liberally.

Unfortunately, in the good ol' U-S-of-A, I'd give the guy who put up the display in the first place (permit and all) a higher chance of getting charged/cited for something than this harpy. While it's harder to get away with actively pushing religion at the higher levels of government, municipal governments and police departments can get pretty farking bad. On the plus side, at least they gave a permit to the guy in the first place, so they're not totally ignoring the rules...

dennysgod: I understand why she'd be upset

Perhaps you could explain it to the rest of us then. I don't see where the offense is here.

As the descendent of Anglo-Saxon and continental Celtic peoples, I find the cross to be very offensive as it is a reminder of the torture and enslavement of non-Latins by the warmongering Romans.

I think its pretty well known that most religious poeple are relax and dont care much about it. I personally, being a Christain myself, didnt give to thoughts about it. Someone thought differently then I do and shows it. I may think to myself, "That persons an idiot" but I usually keep it to myself till under fire by someone.

No need to pick a fight, just a need to defend myself in a fight.

I realize that in all religions and beliefs (or lack of), there are the extremist that basicly paint the picture for all. Its that picture that bothers people and usually shows up in the media. Never the "Down to Earth" ones.
