Prometheus
Looper
Gravity

Easily the top three. And then in 2013, who the hell isn't excited for Elysium?

2011-12-13 11:25:01 AM
Prometheus is the only movie I'm actually planning to see in a theater, because it will absolutely kill me to wait until it's released on Blu-ray.

2011-12-13 11:27:49 AM
Iron Sky FTW.

2011-12-13 11:31:10 AM
I saw the trailer for Chronicle & was interested. Looked kinda like Heroes done realistically.
Want to see Prometheus--love Ridley Scott
I'll see Looper just because I like Willis & Joseph Gordon-Levitt
Never heard of Lockout, but I loved Fifth Element, so will go see it.

The others I'll wait to see how they do on RottenTomatoes before deciding.

/Sci-fi & action movies are the only reason I'll go to theatres. Otherwise, meh--I'll wait until they're on Netflix.

Never heard of it. Mars, I'm guessing.

Ooh, Blomkamp and Damon. I'm in.

The biggest star of Looper is Rian Johnson. If you haven't seen Brick or The Brothers Bloom, do it now.

Ooooh, ditto.

From wiki: "Elysium is set on another planet in the far future. The film will combine sociopolitical ideas and action"

So, kinda like Red Mars?

I'm excited as hell for that movie.

Also, I had never heard of "Lockout." A Luc Besson doing sci-fi again? Awesome/

I would love that series to be a set of movies, except it would never work. Maybe a 6 season HBO show.

*wikis the plot*

Brothers Bloom looks okay and I vaguely remember hearing about Brick. May add the latter to the Netflix queue.

/I'm kinda on thin ice w/the queue after renting Shoot 'Em Up and Prince of Darkness
//One more strike, I lose control of the queue and will be subjected to bad 70s disaster movies

Forget the plots. It's about his ability to direct and write. His style is unique and pretty incredible. Just watch the first 20 minutes of Brick and you'll see what I mean. Dude has a brilliant way with language.

Yes, really, subby. It is based on a novel that's pretty much the granddaddy of space opera, after all.

Though, with the long time in Development Hell, it'll likely be as horrifying as Duke Nukem Forever was. But it still has the potential.

2011-12-13 01:03:48 PM
Yes, subby, I am, in fact, looking forward to John Carter. Saw the 3D preview in from of Dark of the Moon (Which I enjoyed, much more than Revenge of the Fallen.), and thought it was spiffy.

Howard Waldrop and I are reviewing John Carter (which looks awesome and close to the book, probably thanks to the exceptional writing talents of Michael Chabon) and Prometheus, and I just queried our editor about Iron Sky (which looks like it could be good, stupid fun).

Looper looks pretty stupid. If you can travel back in time, you don't need hit squads to kill people, because you're already unbelievably rich.

2011-12-13 01:43:58 PM
Um, why the fark isn't John Dies at the End (new window) listed?

And directed by the director of Finding Nemo, Wall-E and A Bug's Life. It's should be fun, at least.

I just hope The Avengers isn't a big let down. If it is, that will probably kill the comic book movie genre.

This list is worthless without "Sharktopus 2."

improvius: Um, why the fark isn't John Dies at the End (new window) listed?

Because the book was fairly crap, so I don't expect much more from the movie?

John Carter, however actually looks like it stands a chance of being a decent adaptation.

2011-12-13 01:56:12 PM
Good to see at least a couple of those weren't "dumb scifi" (ie Avatar, Transformers, etc).

So little hard scifi gets into the theaters, the genre is becoming as rare as westerns.

Why isn't Total Recall taking place on Mars? Wouldn't that be integral?

It's being distributed by Disney. It will have its balls cut off.

I saw some clips from John Carter (they cut the "from Mars" part out for some reason, apparently simply John Carter sounded more interesting) and it looks like it was filmed in Utah. Which is fine, location shooting on Mars would probably be expensive but color filters aren't.

Chronicles definitely looks like it borrowed a wee bit from "Akira" there near the end of the trailer, but it looks promising.

"Avengers" won't kill the comic book movie genre; the shiatty movies are killing it. Iron Man II was a total letdown. complete with inexplicable editing error bloopers making it all the way through to the final cut. "Thor" was cheesy enough to be in the same class as "Superman III". "Superman Returns" was just... tired, and poorly cast for the supporting crew. "Captain America" was so close to good, and yet it still fell flat. They're getting worse, not better, and that's not too good, especially with Joss Wheadon's track record at the helm of movies. He does great TV, but lousy scripts (with the exception of "Toy Story").

Honestly, I'm sadly convinced that "Avengers" will be "Spider Man III" with the usual Wheadon flare for killing a main character when you least expect it. Ta daa! instant crap. Oh, and speaking of "Spider Man"... yeah, just what the world wanted, another mutha farking reboot within a decade of the last one; that only worked with "The Hulk".

Seems to me thoes are the only SciFi movies in this top 10. And even that's arguable.

SciFi isn't just space aliens and blast lasers.

Whedon doesn't have that kind of juice. He's free to kill off his Firefly characters but they're not going to let him kill off a superhero in a franchise that I'm sure they intend to inflict on us for at least another decade.

There's actually some sci-fi movies in that list that I haven't even heard of that might be pretty interesting. Won't make a dime but I'm glad they're getting made.

Brick is one of my favorite movies ever. That was the movie that first illustrated how great an actor JGL could be. I immediately want to see this new movie.

Johnson has also directed an episode of Breaking Bad ("Fly") and an episode of the late but great Terriers ("Manifest Destiny"). Even better, he occasionally trolls the hell out of the Slashfilm podcast, once randomly reading from a fanfic about the regular crew of the show.

Semi-Semetic: Why isn't Total Recall taking place on Mars? Wouldn't that be integral?

A deadly, desolate wasteland populated by corrupt leaders and a downtrodden mutant underclass is integral to the story...so, to keep it realistic, the setting was changed to Detroit.

Whoa whoa whoa there, sparky. Michael Chabon is doing the script for John Carter? Hmmm. The previews had it looking like every other generic sci-fantasy actioner. But now it sounds like it has the potential for a lot more. Thanks for the tidbit there.

I'd pay to see robot wars played out on mars via armed rovers. Maybe one from the US and one from China.

The speed-of-light lag time would add an element of surprise.

See, that's where you'd have to invest in the artificial intelligence side of the house: You control the over-all strategy, but the rover has to be able to make decisions on it's own, because there is no way you'll be able to control it fast enough.

John Carter
Released: 9 March

Some people are so daft.

January through early April is a dumping period for movies that studios have no faith in. The original release date was June 2012. So what does moving it up to March mean? Disney thinks it's terrible, that it has no chance of competing with summer movies, and they doesn't want to spend the money needed to market a summer movie because they think it's a lost cause.

When you premier an action film with an estimated budget of $250,000,000 million in March, that means you're going for the write-off and rushing it to DVD.

Makes me think of "Peace on Earth" by Lem for some reason. That would make an awesome movie, if you toned it down just a little bit. Great, funny book, but too weird to be adapted directly to film.

Semi-Semetic: Why isn't Total Recall taking place on Mars? Wouldn't that be integral?

Not with respect to the original short story. I was putting this in the same bucket as the "The Thing" remake, but then I read this: "the presence of the great Bryan Cranston to consider; he's stepping into Ronny Cox's old shoes as sneering corporate bad guy, Vilos Cohaagen."

Yeah, I might have to go catch it.

FTA - "Tom Hanks dressed as a woman?" Yeah, its been done. But, to be fair he was fabulous.
