Ironically, in the Middle Ages it was common for wealthy patrons to have artists paint scenes from the Bible and have the patron painted into the picture, usually shown as a supplicant offering prayers to the main figures. It was intended to show the patron's piety.

Seriously, I think the artist was having one over on Chavez.

Don't see the issue. I realize that the nativity is supposed to be this serene pastoral scene, but you'd have to be naive to think the forces of Satan weren't there observing and planning the great temptation.
