FTFC - So first we called them stupid, and now they are grossly overconfident according to another study.

Low IQ and overconfidence frequently go together

"Hold my beer and watch this" is a sure sign of both

Why do people continue to link to Slashdot discussion threads about an article instead of just linking to the farking article?! And what's wrong with the mods that greenlight them?!

I can see three that could fit that description

BurnShrike: Why do people continue to link to Slashdot discussion threads about an article instead of just linking to the farking article?! And what's wrong with the mods that greenlight them?!

Because this way, they not only gen discussion on the topic, but also on why it's bad etiquette to link to secondary sources, and how Reddit covered the story first anyway and all us Farkers and Slashers are just copycats and how can we possibly live withourselvesbeingsolameasweare?

So it's a three for one.

As long as my workplace continues to use crappy Sharepoint for its intranet, I'll be forced to use crappy internet explorer to access it.

Biased. Most people are exposed to IE and continue to use it. So the odds of finding dumb peple using IE are greatly increased. Using IE doesn't mean your dumb, the results of his test was that dumb people use IE.

I am continually amazed at Google and Mozilla's abilities to ignore critical bugs (or rather, not bother fixing them because laziness) for years on end.

Truth. Start the average computer user out with any of those other browsers and the numbers will plummet for them as well.

One extra unnecessary action. It's an unsavory route taken by Ask with their shiatty spyware, and that of loads of other virus, spamware, malware and spyware distributors.

It's abhorrent, really. If I want your god damned browser, I'll get it myself.
Of course, the whole point is to install it on the desktops of those who are hurrying through an install, or those of the ignorant, which is just underhanded.

Genius!

So this could be more of socio-economic result more than anything else. People of lower socioeconomic status and lower IQ scores have a correlation (Herrnstein, R.J., & Murray, C. (1994). The Bell Curve: Intelligence and class structure in American life. New York: Free Press.) Not saying it is causative, and it doesn't need to be for our discussion here (correlation will suffice).

So it seems that the lower cost computers are primarily Windows PC's from major "big box" retailers. I don't mean that you can't build one yourself for less, rather as a whole, the lower cost fully complete systems are are Windows PC's. Obviously, Windows PC's have IE installed by default, and have IE as the default web browser. (These PCs also have a bunch of junk software installed, but that isn't necessarily relevant here) Thse are the PCs that those with limited means (but means nonetheless) to purchase a computer will do so.

So it comes down to this:
Lower socioeconomic status correlates with lower IQ
Lower socioeconomic status correlates with limited means for attaining a PC
Limited means for PC purchase and lower IQ correlate to purchasing, rather than building, a PC.
Such PCs have IE installed and enabled by default.

Now the question is this: if these lower IQ users started using Firefox or Chrome en masse, would we start seeing problems with those browsers as well?

At best, this can only really be said about those who have yet to upgrade. With IE9, Microsoft finally managed to produce a truly decent browser, and I can't say I feel right holding IE use against those who stay current in this day and age.

Still needs WebGL, though.

A week ago my girlfriend's mom complained to me that her laptop was running excruciatingly slow. Knowing that I'm taking electrical engineering and thus must know how to fix computers (sigh...) she asked me to take a look at it. Being the nice guy, I said I would.

When I got it, the thing was indeed running incredibly slow. I notice that there is a bunch of "speed up my pc" type crapware installed. Whenever you turn on the laptop, they all try to load at once. I just walked away and came back in an hour after things had settled down, and then backed up everything important.

Since the hard drive on the laptop crashed a year ago, I made a disk image of the computer all set up just in case I were to have it fall in my lap in rough shape in the future. Thus, cleaning up the computer took no time at all.

Anyways, I gave the laptop back. It was running like a top. I mentioned to the household how programs like that do jack shiat, and to be careful when installing some software since sometimes other stuff is bundled in and should be deselected to avoid installing.

Fast forward to last night when I was over there for dinner. She mentioned that it was again running slow. In the 4 or 5 days it had been out of my hands, there were three new "speed up my pc" type programs installed already.

I believe their son installed them accidentally when installing some of his shiat programs (such as a program that downloads music off youtube, just torrent that shiat if you can't live without it!) but I was still amazed at how fast things went to shiat.

/csb
//felt like charging them for the cleanup but since it was done completely during Skyrim loading screens it wasn't like it really took up any of my time...

tomcatadam: I am continually amazed at Google and Mozilla's abilities to ignore critical bugs (or rather, not bother fixing them because laziness) for years on end.

Or even the annoying crap.

Ever since tabbed browsing came to real browsers (not just Opera) I've had the "open all the tabs I had open last time so it takes 10 minutes to load the browser" option unchecked.

You know how many times I've opened firefox and had it open to nothing but a blank tab? Probably 17.

My guess would be that it's because people with lower RQ scores are more likely to stay with Internet Explorer, which comes with every Windows system, than to want to bother with installing a different browser.
