I see they don't teach gun handling.

First rule: All guns are ALWAYS loaded
Second rule: booger hook off the bang switch until ready to fire
Third rule: know your target and what is beyond your target
Fourth rule: don't point the muzzle at anything you don't intend to destroy

2011-12-12 11:42:03 PM
Fifth rule: if you're a TSA agent, point it at your forehead

TSA agents aren't trusted enough to handle firearms. They leave that to the real cops.

A gun detected in a carry-on at a checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was accidentally negligently fired by an investigating officer around 9 a.m. Sunday, according to a police report.

Yeah, leave the badges to the real cops as well too. While we're at it, leave all the real police work to the real police. The TSA can look through bags and check tickets. When dealing with actual people, let the people with the real training do the job.

They scare me even more thinking they know about firearms.

Firearms are not allowed in carry-on bags

Thanks, CNN. I also love how the article's passive voice implies that the gun fired on its own.

carry-in?

CARRY IN?

2011-12-13 12:20:11 AM
I don't understand why you can't have a gun at public gathering. I see guns on peoples' hip all the time at different functions -- some even state sanctioned areas (such as the Indy Tree Lighting).

If he had a license he should have been fine. It was the dumbshiat working for the TSA that discharged the gun.

2011-12-13 12:20:45 AM
So yeah, I'll be flying out of Hartsfield on my way back to Texas in January. And given the time of the morning when I hit the security lines, and if a gun is fired, I'll probably just turn my head to look in all directions and mutter something like "the fark was that" and then just look kinda dumb as I stand there and try to figure out why everybody is ducking.

2011-12-13 12:21:04 AM
Wait... so the weapon's owner was showing the officer how to clear the weapon, yet hadn't cleared it himself before packing it? The stupidity displayed by all parties in this article is beyond belief.

2011-12-13 12:21:09 AM
Hey, I like a good TSA bashing as much as the next guy, but you kids should maybe RTFA. It was a real cop who discharged the firearm.

Transportation Security Administration screeners reported the gun to Atlanta police officer N.J. Phillips, the officer wrote in an Atlanta Police Department report. The gun's owner was telling Phillips how to clear the loaded .22 Magnum revolver when it was accidentally discharged, Phillips reported. "The weapon was pointed down towards the screening table."

2011-12-13 12:21:40 AM
Am I missing something? Doesn't the article state that a cop fired the pistol?

Also wtf is up with getting arrested for bringing a deadly weapon to a public gathering? Didn't that happen at all the Tea Party rallies?

Well said! Should teach that to everyone whether they own a firearm or not. Might save some lives.

No no, what the hell are you talking about, it's only negligence if it's done by a civilian. It's a forgivable accident when something like this happens.

By the way, did anybody else notice that the gun owner got arrested and charged with bringing a deadly weapon to a public gathering? I would have thought the whole idea of such a checkpoint was to avoid such charges by relieving people of things that could get them indicted.

Then in that case next time they have to check and see if the weapon is loaded or not have them stick the muzzle in their mouth, then ask them to pull the trigger.

Could be messy. YMMV.

Can I ask a serious question?

We have thousands of servicemen and women coming back who know what terrorists are all about. Can you explain to me why they aren't working TSA and are out of work, while someone with half-a-brain and a record is acting like a power hungry douche?

I am, but as an air force vet, George ought to know that an aircraft uses nautical.. oh fark it.
carry on is the accepted nomenclature. There are plenty of other misused words and common malapropisms out there that deserve a kick in the

StoPPeRmobile: A gun detected in a carry-on at a checkpoint at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport was accidentally negligently fired by an investigating officer around 9 a.m. Sunday, according to a police report.

THIS. It is impossible to discharge a modern firearm without either intent or imcompetently handling it. If you don't know enough about the weapon to safely handling it, find someone who does. And if you're so boneheaded and incompetent that you think you're some badass and end up severely endangering the public because you grabbed a gun, you should not be charged with public safety.*
I rarely advocate for dismissal of people on the basis of one fark-up, but this is an exception.

*I use "public safety" and TSA only tentatively in this. The stated purpose is for public safety, even though it seems they do a better job of endangering it lately.

the tea party rallies were not past a security checkpoint in an airport. so no.

a lot of stupid in this thread. he accidentally brought a loaded weapon through a security checkpoint. this is a crime. he will probably get off with a wrist slap after the court hearing, when he demonstrates it was an accident and he meant no harm.

TSA requires a GED but most of our veterans have actual high school diplomas so they're considered overqualified?

So, if he's being charged with carrying a deadly weapon at a public gathering and may even incur civil penalties... what is the penalty for picking up a weapon that doesn't belong to you and negligently discharging it in public? Is that one of those 'free pass' rent-a-cop things? If you do it... terrorist? If I do it... oopsie?
