I find the piece directly below the Red Roof mention in the article of far more interest. First class and 'elite' passengers don't have to get groped by the TSA. WTF?

FTFA:

TSA's PreCheck program expected to grow fast

In the two months since the federal government began letting fliers who provide background information to zip through special airport security checkpoints, more than 120,000 passengers have taken advantage of the program.

Fliers who participate in the Transportation Security Administration's PreCheck program don't have to remove shoes, belts or coats at designated airport checkpoints. So far, the TSA has invited only some frequent fliers with Delta and American airlines to participate in PreCheck at airports in Atlanta, Dallas, Detroit and Miami.

The number of passengers using PreCheck is expected to grow quickly because TSA Administrator John Pistole announced last week that first-class and other "elite" passengers on United and Continental airlines will be allowed to participate in the program next year.

United and Continental are set to merge by March to create the nation's largest airline.

The program is also expected to expand to airports in Las Vegas, Minneapolis and Los Angeles early next year. The idea behind the program is to allow TSA agents to devote more resources to checking high-risk passengers and travelers the agency knows little about.

So, if I don't fly first class I'm high-risk?

The farking fark?

The assumption is that people who fly first class today are all frequent flyers with premium status. They go ( or have gone ) through gate rape so many times, they get a pass.

starlost: take the bus and go greyhound. no tsa EVER.

...except that the TSA is now stationing "VIPER Teams" at practically all public transportation stations in the US, including Greyhound, Amtrak, and even metro and L stations :P

(And they've pretty much also started plans at being at major sporting events, too. You could theoretically walk to a football game or the Kentucky Derby and still have to go through a TSA scope-and-grope if they get their way :P)

/have I mentioned that this miserable abortion of an agency should be done away with, the DHS disbanded, security returned to PRIVATE security firms hired by the airlines/Amtrak/Greyhound/sports arenas, and if we need civil defense that goddamned bad we can always rename FEMA under its old name of the Office of Civil Defense?
//REALLY preferred the old Cold War days when civil defense was Civil Defense and didn't have the mission creep the DHS has now :P

The top request by guests was for more electrical outlets in each room to power smartphones, e-readers and other mobile electronic devices.

I think every hotel will have to add this to their punch list when they remodel. This seems to be an issue at any hotel we stay at, whether it's a luxury hotel or a motel with rooms by the hour.

Too bad that Bush is the one responsible for it, and that most of the egregious policies had their genesis during the Bush Administration.

According to the article they're going to replace the carpets with faux hardwoods, but won't they just get sticky?

As the rooms get remodeled, that'll happen. Just don't expect it anytime soon at brands like Days Inn.

I carry a small 4 plug extension cord with me because hotels are so poorly wired. And they're really late to the dance with the flat screens and shower heads. Had those in HI Express and the like for a couple of years at least.

And on the TSA/first class thing, you should know that terrorists never fly first class. Allah forbids it. So there's that.

Yeah, but times have gotten tough in the last 10 years. Lots of downsizing and cost cutting over at Al-Qaeda. All expenses have to be accounted for.

Of course most of the downsizing has come via attrition, so there's that.

Yet active military on leave, and people with DoD security clearances still get groped. Anyone with a DoD clearance has voluntarily given up more personal information on them than anyone wanting to participate in the tsa program. Anyone remember after 9/11 when the government said "...interagency cooperation should be a priority?" So if the DoD has a full life history on someone, why can't anyone who has a security clearance be part of the program - FOR FREE?

My suggestion for improving the Red Roof Inn?

Less drug dealers and crack hookers. More selections in the candy machine.
