If Homeland Security actually figures out that this was a hacker and if they catch him...well...shiat, they are going to pound his ass into the ground...this will be interesting to see unfold as the weeks go on.

What a wasted opportunity.

I think this is an appropriate use of the term "hacker." if anyone not authorized to use the system sent out that message, they would have effectively "hacked" their way through whatever social and/or technological barriers in place to stop them.

how to test a statewide system without getting blamed for the accidental spam... say a hacker did it?

Insert standard complaint of people not being able to opt out of the guvment using your phone as a radio announcement about attacks of extreme butt crack sweat inducing temperatures.

This could have also just been a test and somehow (someone forgot to uncheck some boxes probably) this got sent out.

Once the Tornado warning system in Oklahoma City went off at 3AM due to a test gone wrong. I'm surprised they didn't blame a "hacker".

So this national emergency alert system that they test all the time during important tv. When has it been actually used? Ever? I don't think it was on 9/11.

True. Or it could have been someone authorized to test the system and screwed up the parameters.

Either way, it's not good. I don't know which way would make me feel worse. A vulnerability that can be exploited or incompotence.

Some government office worker probably accidentally butt dialed kdth49wurj on their government issued cell phone which just happened to turn out to be the code for seek shelter immediately.

/That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

dotvincent: "It has been reported that the majority of those receiving the alert are either Android or iPhone consumers."

That is because the two remaining blackberry users had the message hang up on the BES server. It will get to them after a reboot.

That wasn't the work of hackers. Hackers are the ones who browse private Photobuckets by figuring out part of the URL.

"Attention all women! Attention all women! This is a warning from the National Emergency Alert System. U.S. Intelligence Agencies have detected a terrorist plot in which women's panties have been inoculated with anthrax. Remain calm, but immediately remove your panties. As a precautionary measure, you should also remove your brassiere as well and seek out the nearest male for protection and comfort. That is all."

/well, you may as well make it fun...

Virulency: how to test a statewide system without getting blamed for the accidental spam... say a hacker did it?

sounds like the people working on it probably put a new version of the code up and instead of running something in the "test" group just ran it to everyone.

find the software engineer whose face when pale and is currently hiding in the bathroom.

You may notice shaking when you try to talk to him/her.... this is a telltale sign of "OMG WTF I THOUGHT IT WAS THE BETA URL"

Also, do the needful.

Hah, yea. That was the only thing I took out of the article too. I bet most of them had hands as well, and were carbon based lifeforms.
