It's Cougartown on "extended hiatus"?

2011-12-12 03:26:12 PM
Would it make me a hipster asshole if I said that I've never seen any of those shows?

/already an asshole but doesn't want to be a hipster asshole
//actually did see three episodes of The Big Bang Theory and it's horrible

2011-12-12 03:33:32 PM
Anyway, I don't think the "Moonlighting" curse was that the two leads got together as much as one of the leads got the Die Hard gig.

You've never seen Friends or Frasier? Come on now.

The Big Bang Theory is atrocious, even the girl with the hot body and the wonky eye can't make it watchable.

Aren't Big Bang and HIMYM still on the air? I mean technically the jury is out.

Not a full episode, no. Sure, pieces here and there, especially since I've seen every Seinfeld so seeing some of those shows was inevitable. So I know who the characters are and all that but never sat though a whole episode. Not enough to know how two broke chicks could live in a huge apartment in Manhattan anyway.

But The Big Bang Theory is just farking horrendous. It's downright insulting to regular geeks.

So is Bones, so there's half the list already.

"Moonlighting Curse" was because one of the defining aspects of the show, the sexual tension between Maddie and David, was pretty much the only reason to watch it. Sure it was well written and had some good stories, but after that it was boring.

2011-12-12 04:21:12 PM
If the show was headed for a decline because of their relationship or subsequent breakup, it was buoyed torpedoed by the addition of the very fantastic disturbing to look at while unrealistically portraying a "geek girl" Mayim Bialik as Amy Farrah Fowler, who turned the show from great to awesome a steaming pile of shiat.

2011-12-12 04:22:11 PM
The problem with Bones pregnancy is they can't seem to write it properly without turning it into slapstick. Poor slapstick at that.

2011-12-12 04:22:58 PM
thought it was the writers strike that killed moonlighting??? that's how i remember it... maddie started dating the astronaut, bruce got jealous, writers went on strike, was off the air for like a year, came back and everyone had moved on...

Fringe could be on there.... twice.

But, jury is definitely still out.

Exactly. Though I do think it's funny that they've essentially reversed the course of Booth & Bones' relationship from the novels. You know, how they're divorced at the start of the novels?

Not to defend BBT or anything, but if we're calling out shows that need to be cancelled I'd suggest that Glee, Dancing with the Stars, the entire MTV line-up, Survivor, X Factor and about 50 other similar shows should be on the chopping block first.

2011-12-12 04:32:50 PM
FriarReb98: You know, how they're divorced at the start of the novels?

Um...no. That's still Pete (From the series premiere.) who's her ex in the Novels. She WAS with...I can't remember his name now, but there was a Canadian detective she was with for several books, until it fell apart because of his niece.

Yeah, I read them. Didn't read the last one, though, couldn't get into it.

eviljimbo: thought it was the writers strike that killed moonlighting??? that's how i remember it... maddie started dating the astronaut, bruce got jealous, writers went on strike, was off the air for like a year, came back and everyone had moved on...

Yeah, that is pretty much it right there. And besides, the Moonlighting Effect doesn't even apply to most that list precisely because the characters involved were not the lead characters. It is expected that the tangential or supporting characters will hook up because that is what tv execs think will bring interest and depth to a show, but the tension between leads is different. That has to be maintained or you end up with resolution, which brings a sense of closure to the viewer. If that closure happens right before a hiatus or a writer strike, getting the show started back up again is next to impossible because the interest has been lost.

/Taming of the Shrew episode FTW, btw.

These shows all sucked BEFORE any major couples got together, though.

Friends is a confusing show in particular. Matthew Perry, Jennifer Aniston, and Lisa Kudrow are legitimately good with comedy and Courtney Cox is a good straight-woman. How did that show stink so bad?

It was a well written show, regardless of how much it oversaturated pop culture.

Fish in a Barrel: I don't get this argument, but apparently a lot of geeks are offended by the show. Maybe it's because I'm a nerd, not a geek.

I don't get it either. It's a show about geeks for non-geeks and, frankly, it gets a crap-ton of geekdom quite accurate.

It doesn't always *glorify* being geeky, though, which is maybe what people get butt-hurt about.

I am frightened to ask but is there a difference?

I find all the characters on BBT to be really annoying or incredibly bland. It is a popular show so they must be doing something right.

My husband, friends, and I are geeks and most of us love the show. From my experience, the ones who hate the show the most are the absolute die-hard, socially inept nerds. They see the characters as mockeries of themselves instead of just amalgams of a bunch of geeky references.

/Hey, if Wil Wheaton & Brent Spiner can parody themselves on the show, we can certainly laugh at ourselves.

It's not that I don't like the show; it does make me laugh. I just don't hate myself for missing an episode or 2, or 4. I'm not compelled to keep up with the show and for me that's a points-against.

I love the scene that second picture is from. The tantalizing closeness, the nice trick shot where you can't tell if they're kissing or not. That was a beautifully shot scene.

Handy-dandy reference:

Individually, the characters can be bland and/or annoying. As an ensemble show, however, they have excellent chemistry and some, most notably Jim Parsons (Sheldon) and Kaley Cuoco (Penny) have great comic timing. The best scenes are when 2 or more of the characters are playing off each other, as opposed to focusing on any character in particular.

Because she usually wears glasses and has a grating, high-pitch voice, which in TV and movies = ugly chick. She's so horrific that she ended up with Wolowitz. That pic isn't doing her many favors, though - a touch of the crazy eyes and a waaaaay too toothy smile, plus it totally camouflages her wonderful chest.

burn-notice.maxupdates.tv

Granted, the show started out w/Fiona as Michael's ex, but now they're officially back together and the show has gotten better. Now her arguments against his crazier plans is more out of genuine concern than her previous "that's a dumb pan. Let's blow stuff up, instead" mentality.

Yes and no. The definitions are a source of constant debate since the labels are largely self-assigned. In essence, my comment was an in-joke.

I'm with you - I find BBT to be a cute, harmless show. (Yes, I know there is a laugh track. I don't care). The chem between Penny & Sheldon is a highpoint too.

Well firstly, I don't know the difference between a "nerd" and a "geek". But it's accepted that either is defined as a smart person who is into sci-fi. Why the show sucks is because the characters are depicted as the stereotype of what non geek/nerds think geek/nerds are like. And no, it's not that nerd/geeks can't laugh at themselves, it just doesn't ring true is all.

Wouldn't Cheers be a better example of not falling to the Moonlighting Curse?

I mean, the first 5 seasons of Cheers were all about Sam and Diane, will they/won't they.

Then, Shelly Long thought other people wanted to hire her, so she left. But Cheers still continued on. In fact, Cheers lasted longer without the Sam and Diane thing than it did with them as the focus of the show.
